Thanks. Still pisses me off that LA won't allow it since it was designed after 1900. The action is ok with a muzzleloader barrel but not with a 45/70 barrel? Makes no sense to me....

The rimmed cartridges work better in the Handi rifles all the way around, not just a 35 Whelen problem.

I would consider the 45-70, 45 Colt carbine, or the 38-55 target setup if I were you.

Thanks for all the advice. I've found a NEF Ultimate hunter made in '96 as a RMEF run. It has a 26" barrel and laminate stock. I'm hoping to overcome any headspace issues in the reloading proccess so we'll see. I didn't want to spend the extra money to put together an Encore and I actually like the NEF. The .45-70 NEF that I'm shooting is a great fast handling, accurate little rifle. It hits hard also. Thanks again, David

That is priceless! I've been looking for the right words to express my feelings on the Encore, and you just nailed it. smile

Well said. And if I were the owner of a Ruger #1 I would be hesitant to offer any critisizm whatsoever of an NEF until I got the Ruger to shoot at least 1 MOA...I've had both and considering the price difference the NEF does just fine.

Actually I have a H&R in a BC and a Target ...the Target 38-55 is a pain because of a oversized groove dia. of .381+ ...I haven't shot the BC , but the friend I bought it off of did real well with it usung a caseful of H4350 under RCBS 405gr boolits killing several Black Bear, Deer and a Moose...

David...Good luck with your 35 Whelen...It may shoot great right from the get-go...I can't see NEF making a run back in "96" and then making a more recent run if the had headspace problems the first time...Like I said earlier a NEF in 35 Whelen would be a neat rifle and I almost bought one from Rusell's Sport in Calgary over a year ago until I found a Ruger LTD #1 in 35 Whelen on GunBroker...
I still think encores are ugly though..just my opinion which counts for nothing... grin
