Is this the bullet that Jack O'conner used in his 30-06 to kill moose and grizzly bears with? I remember reading one of his stories about shooting through a grizzly and the bullets were hitting the bank on the other side of the bear.

Don't know but I wish they were still offered as components.
Western Tool and Copper bullets just popped into my mind. Maybe thats what he used.

I think it was a spitzer 180 cor lokt, not a roundnose as I recall. I wish you could still get the RN in loaded ammo.

RN bullets get a bum rap. Most big game hunting shots occurs are under 200 yards and the better ballistic coefficient of spitzers just does not come into play.
RN bulets just work well.

Just finished reading a mag article entitled "The .30-06" by Jack O'Conner. In it he says except for 1 grizzly shot with a .300 Wthby, two with a .270 Win,and 1 with a 200gr Barnes bullet in a .30-06,the rest were taken with 180gr bullets in a .30-06(Remington Core-Lokts,Western open points, and Winchester pointed soft-point expanding). He also says his wife used mostly 180gr Remington rn soft-point Core-Lokts when she used 180's in her .30-06.

Last time I looked we could still get them here. Have they been discontinued?

I've got several of JO'Connor's books. He used the pointed Remington Core-Lokt bullets, not the RN version for most of his moose and grizzly kills. I think he did take one moose with a 220 gr. bullet. The problem is that the current Core-Lokts is that the pointed version has a much different, i.e. both thinner and no hour glass shaped jacket, than the round nose. The new "Premier Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded" bullet appears to be better in this respect, but you have to pay for this "extra." It's too bad. The current pointed version has apparently nothing like the rep that the older, heavier, hour glass shaped jacket design. The round nose version, however, does have the older design. Anyone who doubts this needs to look at Remington's 2008 catalog, page 66. It has a picture of both. E

Darn shame Remington doesn't still offer the .308 cal 180 rn as a reload component. It shows the kind of expansion and weight retention characteristics I like in a bullet and from 1400fps up to 3100fps. Compares favorably with many of the premium bullets.

The 180 gr RN Hornaday is about as close as you are going to get to the Old Remingtion Core Lokt's. Remington use to make a 175 gr RN 7mm. They use to load that one in 7 x 57 and gee's did that load work on game.

Haven't use the Hornady, but have use the Sierra 180 and 220 gr RN . I haven't bought any of the 180's for awhile, but bought 200 of the 220 gr about 18 months ago.

Anyone remember the .30 cal 180gr bullet expansion test w/chart in Handloader mag yrs back? VERY eye opening. I have it and tried posting the chart awhile back but couldn't get it large enough to see.

If they made the spitzer CoreLokts like they used to, there'd be little need for most of us to use anything else. However, they don't. I've had a number of them fail to penetrate all the way through whitetails, until I finally quit using them.
The Winchester PowerPoint is a pretty good stand in.

The new PSP cor-lokt, is not equilalent to the old ones. I agree with most here that the Hornady Interlock comes close, may even exceed the performance of the old cor-lokt.

Yes, it was 'mostly' the RN that he and his wife Eleanor used according to his articles. Have a 'summary' magazine dedicated to O'Connor that Peterson's did shortly after his death which I drug out . (also some of his books) Contains articles , including the '30/06 one mentioned above' , on most North American game, various calibers - 270,30/06, 7mm Mag, 300 mag; bullets and some other topics. Spent the last couple evenings enjoying the various articles . He mentions other bullets (180's ) as well but in several articles referrs to the 180 RN corelokt , his and Eleanor's use of it and its performance. I'm a savage 99 fan and it was neat to see photo's of a couple of 99's in what would be unusual territory today - one 1930's desert sheep where the guide used a 99 in 300 savage and a picture of a guy on a goat mountain with a scoped 99 Cheers

I have yet to hear any complaints from the many hunters I load ammo for about the Core-locs. That stretches from Alaska to Arizona. No failures in the .25 and the .308 dia. When I can I buy these bullets by the case lot. I'm in the process of loading 1,000 rounds of .30-06 with the 180 grain Core-locs. If I load a premium bullet it is a Woodleigh. For everything that does not need a high end bullet it is still the Remington.
Until I get negative feed back on these bullets from my customers, I'll continue to load them. There is no other test for a well place bullet, than how fast the animal dies.

Do you guys think the Hornady interlocks are better than a pointed core-lokt in the same weight? By better, I mean do they have thicker jackets and blow up less on closer shots....like the "old core-lokts" and perform more like the roundnose?

Jack O'Connor used both the RN and the spitzer Rem Corelokt, he always said the RN was the more dependable of the two and I have to agree with that and I have used them both. I have had excellent results with the Spitzer also so don't be mislead by the statement I make as the RN being more dependable, its a close race..In fact back in those days these two bullets were about the ONLY decent bullets on the market and its just as good today as it was back then..I still have a good supply of the 180 RN Corelokts and I use them in my .308 Savage M-99F as they work well in the shot magazine..They work on deer, elk and bear as well as anything I have used but will not penetrate with a Nosler partition or the monolithics, but they have enough penetration to suit all but the penetration fanatics of this world.....:)
