If that's in your 357PD, then the heat sheild is missing. I'm pretty sure any of the scandium frame guns have the stainles heat sheild. I'd recommned putting in a call to S&W right away. If it's supposed to have the heat shield, then I'd say that S&W owes you a new frame...hell, they owe you a new gun.

Lew I tend to agree based on my revolvers. I had an older Model 19 that never cut like that and my Ruger .44mag single action doesn't look like that either. I don't know but I think something is wrong.

Long before I posted here I sent S&W the same photo in an email. I await the reply.

Photos of this revolver locked up and now apparently missing the heat shield have been on the Internet enough that I would think S&W would be extremely motivated to make this right...
Maybe customer service needs a link to this thread.... better still if it has grown a few pages first.

It looks like it has a heat shield. I can see the lip in the photo.

Yeah, but it looks like it is maybe 1/4 the size I remember them having been when I first saw one though.

You're right (amazing what you can see when you put your glasses on), the little fold up against the frame stands out like a sore thumb (I uaually don't wear my glasses when I'm at the computer, makes my eyes tired).
Okay, now that brother RickyD pointed out what should have been obvious to me, I change my position.
I'll defer my opinion to S&W. They could say it's within normal limits, or they may say the heat shield needs to be replaced.

Did they send a call tag?

Apparently stainless steel has more resistance to flame cutting than carbon steel. Absolutely. Flame cutting is, to all intents and purposes, very very fast rusting (oxidation). The same properties that keep stainless steel from rusting make it very difficult to flame-cut.
