By the way, SU, how big is a sage rat? Prarie dog size? Excuse my ignorance but the only rats around here are nutria and plain old Norwegian rat rats (some of which look like they could take a hit amidships with a .45) I assume sage rats are more petite, yes?

Money shmoney, By the time you start lobin those 22s past

a 100 you could buy one round of 17 M2 that would hit it the first time.

Steve, Petit, yes, skinny little guys who like to make fools out of varmit shooters like me!

They can be a challenge over the normal praire poodels.

I'll take along the 22 for shots under a 100 or so, but past that

I have plans for the 17 M2. 100 to 200 fits this one for grassy field delight.

Its not just varmit shootin, its varmit blastin! if you get my drift and the 17 should make a..ahh mess of some sorts,

Part of the fun is being able to stay on target when those red tips hit the lower torso. The light recoil of the 17 m2 should help out a bit.

btw, nutria are one huge rat! Here in the Oregon area they

infest golf courses, soooo, we, as in I have this friend call these country clubs and let them know that its

that its time of the year (what do I know!) for the nutria to give birth to lots of other nutria

and pretty soon they will have one messed up golf course.

These counrtry club owner/managers want to get rid of the vermin now! Soooo, we just borrow one of their golf carts

and hit the course water areas at night. We use very high

powered British air rifles in 17 or 22 caliber, you know the kind that you can fill up with an air tank and its good for 20 shots at over a 1000 fps. We take our limit which seems to be every thing in sight. When done we let the country club manager/owner know that we'll need to come back in a few months as nutria are resilant and will want to take vengance on his pretty plants and grass. Some times we even charge

him and they pay up when they see how many we've eliminated. Yahoo!

SU--I had no idea those bloody nutria rats had gotten that far north. Down here they have more than one litter a year and breed like roaches---the gators can't eat them fast enough, and the fur market is dead, so they're eating our marsh up at an amazing rate. That 's my primary interest in the .17 HMR--.223s make them go to ground too fast so you don't get more than one at a time (unless I can catch a family picnic in the open with my AR and a full clip of BTs).
