Guess I missed this one the first time around. Good read. I love the Trappers. As a young pimp its what us farm boys always toted and kicked around. Its a very versatile tool that is at home in the East just as well as the West.

Hi would like extra help with my 30-30 Trapper handloading. Win PowerPoint 170gn FN factory ammo gave good accuracy. I am new to handloading. I found my 170gn Sierra was not grouping well. 3-6 inches on some loads of 170gn Sierra FN at 50m. After some advice please. I was considering maybe trying the 150 gn FN but I would prefer 170gn.

Most of mine shoot 150s well enough, but 170s better.
Trying for the fastest load is not always the most accurate choice. Either try a wider variety of loads, or switch powders.
Opinions will vary, but I have found other bullets to group more easily than Sierra.
It is hard to beat IMR 4064 and 3031 in the.30-30. Other powders may brag a little more speed, but they are a proven powder in that cartridge for many years.
I've had good luck with the Speer 170 Soft Point Flat Nose.

I am in agreement with fireball.
The FTX series bullets, Lever evolution powder, CCI 250 primers, with matched brass is my favorites for better velocity out of shorter barrels.
I believe heavier bullets will present better Terminal ballistics. But no science there just belief and bias.
I usually end up settling on the lower range of the powder chart. In the 30 30, very few will tolerate " max " load for me.
