I got a 30-06 gun that I want to rebarrel. What all can I go to. Just wondering if anybody has a list of long action calibers.

I believe at one time Winchester fit every cartridge they offered in a M70 of one action size, long.
You are not really limited too much to a specific lenght. What are some you`ve been concidering?

That might depend quite a bit on what kind of ".30-'06 gun" you have, and how much money you are willing to spend. If, for example, you have a Winchester Model 95, you are pretty much limited to cartridges based on the '06 case, like .270 Win. or .35 Whelen. If you have a Remington 700, you can rebarrel to any .473" base diameter cartridge, basically. If you're willing to pay for opening up the bolt face and reworking the feed rails, you could go to a .375 H&H, if you wanted to.

To answer your question with technical accuracy:

.224
.243
.257
.264
.277
.284
.308
.323
.338
.358
.366
.375
.405
.411
.416
.423
.458

Those are the "long action calibers" that I am aware of, though I may have missed one. You may find one or many cartridges using bullets of those diameters that are worth considering for your rebarrelling project.

Assuming you have a typical bolt action 30/06, your easiest choices would be cartridges built on the 30/06 case, such as:

25/06
270
280
35 Whelen

others that would work
7X57
257 Roberts
6MM Rem

you can spend a little more $$ to rework that action and chamber for some of the original "30/06" length magmuns:

264 Win Mag
7Mag
300 Win Mag
338 Win Mag
270 Weatherby Mag
257 Weatherby
7mm Weatherby Mag

and then there are a gazillion wildcats...

The standard 30-06 action would not be suitable for the extra long rounds like 300 Wby. 300 H&H, 375 H&H, 7mm STW etc., for these you would need the M70 long magnum action.

Depends. They will work in a Remington 700.

For some reason I thought we were talking M70's.

Oh, absolutely--especially a .375 H&H length action, so you can seat those 120's WAY out there....

So far we've forgotten to put .240 Weatherby Magnum on the list. Well, not anymore.

6.5x55 works best in a long action too. just think...low recoil, high penetration, small amount of powder, shooting from groundhogs to elk with the same rifle...

perfection.

not that i am biased in any way, wink

thanks guys very sorry for the lack of information..The rifle is a remington 700 adl. I would like to be able to kill a deer if need but really want something smaller for coyotes and is a pain to shoot. Do you have any feeding problems with a short action caliber say 22-250 or 243 in a long action. I've got a couple in mind 280AI or a 6.5x284. but if there is not problem with sa caliber in long actions then that opens a whole new ball game.

What's wrong with getting another barrel in .30-06?

What! Somebody had to say it.

Thank you very much.

A rebarrel is much easier if you stick with the same case head dimensions or within a thousanth or 2. That measurement on a 30-06 is .473"

It does not hurt to chamber a shorter case like the 6.5x284 in a longer action. When you rebarrel it lets you set the longer bullets out further so you don't take up powder room in the case. I rebarreled a 300 win mag to a 6.5 rem mag and the cases chamber with no problem and there is plenty of mag room for those long 6.5 bullets

Better selection of varmint bullets in .257 than .264 might be a factor for you. If you handload, there is a better selection of game bullets for the 6.5-06. Realistically, though, when you're talking about a 0.007" difference in bore diameter it's a coin toss where field performance is concerned. If you're planning to shoot factory ammo you'll have much better choice and availability with the .25-06.

I've weeded out the cartridges that duplicate one another from my arsenal, for the most part. I'm down to a .270WSM, a .338WM and a .260 (just because of the Kimber Montana it comes in). I have a few others that I hold on for sentimental reasons or just in case or because they are too accurate to sell, but they don't see a lot of use. Might get a Swift someday.
