I guess the title pretty much asked the question. if you purchased a .22-250 could it be converted to a .308 with just a new barrel? thanks

Yes, you will have to modify the magazine most likely though.

What would need to be done to the magazine. This is a Remington 700 action.

Stick a .308 round in the magazine and see if it fits and tries to feed. It might need a new mag box and follower -- or it might be fine.

+1 what Dennis said. The 250 case has more taper to it than the .308, but it might still feed OK.

Would a .308 mag box fit into the slot on a receiver intitally designed for 22-250?

The most you will have to do is change the follower. the rest is the same. the follower may be the same also. try it before you spend money on things you don't need.

pharmvet, I converted a Savage centerfeed 243 to 250 Savage with no feed problems at all. While I had the barrel off, I fed some 257 Roberts rounds through the mag., again with no problems. YMMV.

My last conversion had a spacer in the magazine. Don't know if that's the case now or not
