i have a chance to get one of these in good shape for under $300.00. what do you all think? i've never seen one and truthfully don't know much about them at all.

If you collect them, buy it.
If you're planning to shoot it and you're a reloader, maybe buy it.
If you're not a reloader, probably don't buy it.

The Savage 340 action only has 1 locking lug and might be near the edge, strength wise, for the factory loaded 225 pressure. I think that the Savage 340 is better suited to the 22 Hornet and 30-30. Also, the Savage 340 has a split rear receiver ring, so you have to use a side-mounted scope.

The 225 is a "seasonal" run of factory ammo by Winchester/Olin and might be hard to find and expensive when you do find it. Same/same with brass, since only Winchester/Olin has ever (TTBOMK) made/sold 225 brass and ammo.

Bottom line, if you're buying this rifle to shoot, you'd be ahead of the game with a Stevens 200 in 223 or 22-250.

i bought it! got it for 290.00 at an auction. it has a 3x9 redfield on it and is in pretty good shape. i reload so finding ammo should not be a concern. a friend was at the auction so i had to make a quick decision on this one. didn't know a whole lot about them but i've been looking a the 225 win for awhile.

Harvey Donaldson liked it and, IIRC, made up a 225 on a Remington 722 action, probably 1 of his last rifles.

Neat cartridge. I have really enjoyed my ugly ol' 1964-made M70 in 225. VERY accurate. Essentially, it's a 22-250 less 100fps. Mine loves 63gr Sierras and 50gr VMax's. Factory ammo has become VERY expensive and hard to find. but brass is usually available at Midway, etc. for a reasonalble price. IMR4064 and Varget have worked well.

Shootist: Yes, it was Winchester's replacement for the Swift. It was a case of bad timing. 1st, it was introduced concurrent with that horrible new M70 in '64. And then the nail in its coffin was Remington legitimized the 22-250 in '65 IIRC.

Sounds like we musta read the same book or magazine. That's my recollection exactly.

I purchased a used one in 1992, neck sized some of the once fired brass that came with it, if I remember correctly it was close to MOA at 100 yards. Traded it off to a friend of mine who collected Savages.

Often wonder if it was one I should have kept .............

I just picked one up also. My brother had one he used in the sixties and seventies....kinda always wanted one (not really sure why as the things that others have pointed out about the 340 are true and do require consideration when loading for it). Shot mine last week and I got 1-1.5" groups @ 100yds (3-shots, factory ammo) - but the way if you know where Route 66 Sporting Goods is near Clarion, PA they have ammo for $26.00/box about the same as most other ammo nowadays

By the way you got a good deal, have been watching some on Gun Broker and they have been going in the $500 range for one in good condition.

believe it or not,i have a camp about 15 miles from RT. 66 sporting goods!! in fact i just found (and bought) a pre-mil Savage model 99f in .308 from him on my last trip to camp! i'll have to stop and buy some ammo from him next time up!

A little off topic but I had a 340 in 222 rem. It shot outstanding.Wish I still had it.
