Dryflyelk,
I sold a 44mag that wasn't working for me in order to give the 10mm Glock a try. I hear you on the recoil. Recoil from rifles doesn't bug me, but from handguns it does.
I'd like to handle one like yours sometime. I put another 70 rounds through the G20 today; workin' great. I have not run any hot rounds through it yet, just PMC factory ammo and mild reloads.
The CENTER will hold.

dryflyelk,
You can't go wrong with a Safepacker, that's what you need to fit your Glock and you're ready to go. The holster fits on your belt or the hip belt of your backpack, and protects your pistol. It's the best holster for the backcountry you can get.

... by the way, 10mm Auto is a bitchin' round... but it ain't no .41 magnum... Kind of what I was thinking, isn't it about the same as a .357 running hot loads?

The Winchester 175 gr is the only loads I know that compare. the 41 mag is 175gr @ 1250 and the 10mm is a 175 gr @1290 fps. Other than that I believe the 41 MAG THOUGHLY KICKS THE 10MM'S a$$. Especially @ the 210 gr.
Still the 10mm is a great woods gun especially in the element resistant and easy to detail strip Glock.
I've got a 3 inch 44 mag that I really like, but I'm alot more likely to carry my G20. I don't own a 41 mag and don't plan to unless I find an outstanding model 58 for sale cheaper than anyone in their right mind would sell.
All that BS said there is nothing I fear in to lower 48 and maybe Alaska with a G20 ( for more than that I have a rifle).

Glock also recently introduced SF (short frame) versions of both the 20 and 29 for those who have a hard time gripping the extry large Glocks.
A good compromise might be to get an aftermarket 4 to 5-in. bbl for a 29 in order to get original Bren Ten/Delta Elite ballistics. The grip is the hard part to conceal, not the barrel.
For real fun you could have the longer bbl threaded to accept a suppressor and use subsonic loads for low key game harvesting/pest removal.
I have fired both Glock 10s and Smith .41s extensively. I love my M57 4-in., but if I knew I'd be fighting bad people or big apex predators, I'd want the Glock...it's easier to control, has the same power and totes more BBs.
And I'd go with the Silvertip load for Lower 48 use (except maybe Montana).
This thread has got me thinkin' about a regular G29 that's been setting in an area pawnshop for a couple years. May have to get it and have my friendly gun wrencher do a grip reduction to SF dimensions.
With all the hoarding going on of loaded ammo and reloading components I've noticed that the stepchild .41 Mag and 10mm seem to be two calibers for which supplies are still available...

The Glock has a lot going for it as an all weather, dirty conditions backpacking, hiking, biking and everything else backwoods gun.

Great pics there sagebrush - where's the G20 in the last pic? Cool way to get ther with the KLR - can ride it to the trailhead and then up the mountain. I like my Jeep for the same reason but the KLR would be able to go even further in. I like the Glocks but the fat grips have kept me away from the 20 and 21 - guess I need to try the SF versions - its just a very small increment that would need to be trimmed - at least for me. If they're like my XD45, they'll be great.

I found this old thread while looking for something else.
I am going to have to say that today, the G30S is what I find to be the "Goldilocks" of lightweight, portable, decent capacity, big bore handguns when I want to be in the mountains, and not be lugging a steel framed .44 around.
I packed one this week while packing out elk, rather than lug my rifle back and forth, and it was a joy to carry.

MS, Can you share your woods carry load for the 30s? Or at least the bullet type? I've read your previous comments re the 30s...you make a compelling case for it. thnx

Better than this?? If you're going to use that revolver for anything other than to take pics of, you had better make sure you REALLY, REALLY crimp the hell out of full house loads or you'll likely end up with an inoperable piece of metal in your hands.......including re-crimping any factory ammo as well. Ask me how I know............ Nice gun to carry, POS to shoot more than a few times, just sayin'. MM

MM Shouldn't be a problem if used only with the equivalent of a hot Special load, which should more than match the hottest 10mm load for the job in question.

The ULTIMATE backpacker's sidearm is the 396NG.
You're all losers.

Yes, that's true, but then that's not taking full advantage of the caliber stamped on the barrel....... (Directed to TRH.) MM

Travis Well, if you're not going to load a 44 Mag to mag standards, might just as well have one of those 396 POS as instead. GFY MM

I packed one this week while packing out elk, rather than lug my rifle back and forth, and it was a joy to carry. Better than this?? I have a 329. It is a good gun. But in wolf country a strong argument can be made for an auto. Wolves run in packs, and are phenomenally fast. Trying to just get a single hit on one when it is doing 30+ MPH over uneven terrain would be challenging at best, and it would be extremely easy to burn through 6 rounds in a hard recoiling gun like the 329. Don't get me wrong, I like the 329, but I have no illusions as to it's "shootability", as compared to a compact semi auto. Plus there is the reload factor. A sub 2 second reload is no challenge with a G30S, and I can then have 17 rounds of 230 grain JHP on tap with a G21 magazine and a + 4 base plate, as my spare mag. Where I hunt we have wolves, lions and bears. The G30S makes a lot of sense, when you have a pack frame on, or a sled full of quartered up meat.
