Its been my experience that with 243 winchesters that 1:10 twisted barrels will shoot lil clusters with 80-85 gr bullets and 1:9 twisted barrels will shoot lil clusters with 100 gr. bullets, they are both fine rounds as I have a couple 243s but I dont own a 6mm Rem but I like any cartridge formed on the ol 7X57 mauser case.............

If you want to be a little different and get as much as you can out of the Model 7 you can look at the 6mm Crusader that GAP has recently brought out. It pushes the 115gr bullets at 3400fps (needs a 1:8 or faster) and the 100gr at 3550fps. Basicly it is a 6mm with the shoulder pushed out and some of taper removed but still allowing reliable feeding.

I like the handloading potential of the 6mm better. However, there is little room to seat the bullets out very far in my 700. I guess a wyatt's box or something like that could remedy this problem. If i ever rebarrel, it will likely be a 1:8 or 1:9 243

If your new 6mm doesn't shoot 75gr to 100gr.bullets well it isn't the 1 in 10 twist fault.

If there is one particular bullet you plan on loading in your 6mm, make up a dummy round that will fit your magazine and send it with your action and barrel to the smith who is fitting them.

I shoot a 6mm on a short 700. The shilen on it is a 12 twist. I shot NBT 70grainers. Shoots very well.

If it were me I would look seriously at the 6mm AI the slight velocity increase should make it work with 105 grain bullets and I like the long neck. Besides the cool factor is way up there.

It's funny how some barrels with the same listed twist rate will not handle some bullets but others will. I suspect three things: slightly out of speck or slower twist, a smoother more concentric barrel imparts less wobble so the twist has less work to do, and in the case of the longer bullets testing at 200-300 yards might show they have settled down versus 100 yd. tests.

Hope I didn't just perpetuate additional ballistic mythology.

Dont forget some extra speed will also help with stabilization. I have seen a 1:9 twist 22-250 handle some of the heavies that are very marginal with a 1:9 twist .223 (same twist from same manufactures)

Owning both a 243 and a 6mm, I prefer the 6mm.

I prefer the 6mm....BR with 8" twist.

243s and 6mm Rems are both good, 6mm Rem seemed to edge on accuracy.
