thats going to interfere with the shot? \:\) That my friends is an old wives tale. 4 inches of barrel is the length of my pocket knife and can't make any difference in the real world..

Be that as it may. By the same logic, this little discussion:

Wife: Did you do the dishes?
You: No.
Wife: Sweep the floor?
You: No.
Wife: Why not? Only takes 5 minutes!

You have to admit: She is right.
Doing so would be suicide of course, because we all know how long those "Its just 5 minutes - Joblists" are. 12 such jobs are 1 full hour.

Back to gun length. 4" on a 42" rifle are say 10%.
May not be much on one item, but +/- 10% on all equipment get into it.

To me, any rifle longer than 1 m (39") needs to file for justification.

I also battle constantly about the "office 10%" of my body, that I do not want to lug up the mountains. laugh

And here my tight cover rig:

A good lever action 45-70 is tough to beat in the thick stuff.

Ray, in the swamps around here, where vines and creepers grab at everything, less really is more. A little guide gun gets snagged often enough, and a nice 26 inch barreled bolt would be worse. YMMV.

Here's a couple.

1. Marlin Sport Carbine w/Redfield coin slot peep sight, vintage 1950 - .35 Rem
2. Browning Lever Rifle, pistol grip - .358 Win

Both are a joy to carry. Pics attached below.

Remington M600 in .350 Remington Magnum. A compact thumper with class. Talley mounts and a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 scope. 7 lbs. 8 oz. all up, and very nifty in the tight stuff.

Ruger 77 rebarreled to .35 whelen, scope is a 1.5x6 with a #4plex. In real tight cover I might pull the sling but never felt hampered with a 23" tube.

9.3x62, 20" tube. VXII 1x4 with german #4.

I also have a co-pilot in 45/70 that is a really slick little gun.

Next week I might pick up a win 94 in 450marlin.

I am also planning a 458Lott or 458AR with a 20" tube built on a 1917 action.

Can't post pictures but my tight cover rig is a Marlin XLR 45-70 with the barrel cut to 17", fiber optic front sight and a Williams guide peep on the back.

Been considering doing something similar ... although I was thinking more along the lines of 20" ...

45/70 Marlin Guide Gun. I have a M7 in 350 Rem Mag and a Savage 99in 358 and 375. But for buffalo, I just had to bring the 45/70..just had to.

..I think all I have is "tight cover" to hunt in some times... One place in Maine...if you hold the rifle at arms length you can't see the end of the barrel...

Marlin .41 Magnums...

[Linked Image]

Remington .308 Youth/Synthetic set up with a scout scope...

[Linked Image]

..peep-sight for rainy days..

[Linked Image]

Cooper's original Scout Rifle...M600 .308 with a Redfield 2 power IER scope in Leupold Detacho Rings.

[Linked Image]

Pair of .350 Mags... Ruger All-Weater shortened to 18.25" and a M600

[Linked Image]

Current favorite of the shorties... A Frontier in .358 and now have a matching gun in .308..

Would love to have one double rifle in 9.3x74R...saw a Champulis at one of the Cabella's that would fit the bill...came up like a double bird gun...

Top to Bottom

Chilean 1895 Mauser in 7mm Mauser with Fajen Stock and Lyman aperature sight.

Marlin 1895 w/1x-4x Scout scope and XS ghost ring sight in .45/70

Winchester 64 with Lyman 21 aperature sight in .32 Win Special.

Winchester 100 with 2x Weaver in a tip-over mount in .308.

Low power scopes or aperature sights are fast and accurate.

I hunt the national forests in northern Wisconsin with these. They are all more interesting than most stuff in the woods these days and sometimes elicit conversations with the other hunters I run across because of their uniqueness.

Fast Ed
