Does anybody know which of these scopes has the better eye relief in a 4x? Looking for a scope to go on a Rem 600 in 308. Do they weigh about the same? Any preference?

This may not be the best forum on the Campfire to get scope input, but here is mine:

I had a Burris mini 4X 25 years ago, and the ones made then had pretty minimal eye relief. I haven't handled one for a very long time; I don't know if they are better now or not. All the Burris riflescopes I have handled have been noticeably heavier than Leupolds.

M8 4X Leupolds, which ride on two of my favorite hunting rifles, weigh about 8 oz, hold up to any imaginable punishment, and have very useful eye relief and eyebox. The only 4X better, in my experience, is an FX II 4X, which is enough better that I am slowly shifting my inventory to that realm.

I actually like FX II 6X's better than 4X's, for most uses, but you didn't ask about them .

I have a Leupold M8 4X on my Marlin 336 30-30 and an M8 6X on my Winchester model 70 30-06. Both have lots of eye relief and both have taken lots of abuse. I have a Leupold VX-II 3x9x40 on my Remington 700CDL 30-06 and the M8s have more eye relief.

I can't compare to Burris because I have no personal experience with that brand. Sorry.

I have both scopes. The M-8 is a nice small scope and I have it on a Rem 660 in 6.5 Rem Mag. Great set up. Eye relief is ample.

The 4X mini-Burris is the old style with a straight front bell and I have on a Rem 600 in 6mm Rem. This scope is smaller and lighter than the Leopold and the eye relief is similar..maybe a bit less but hard to measure.

While both scopes are excellent I would buy more old style Burris scopes if I come across them. A true mini-scope.

If I had ten of them you could get them for $100...

I'd have to see and measure the eye relief of the Burris to believe it had more eye relief than the M8 Leupold. I've never seen any Burris that had anyhting like the eye box that a Leupold has either.
The Leupold M8, 4X, I have will work in any light even on a dark night, thanks to it's 7mm exit pupil.
They rarely go back to Leupold for anything in spite of the fact that they have been out there for many years. One of the toughest scopes known. I can certainly tell you that even slaming mine to the frozen, rocky ground from shoulder height did not move the scope's zero.
So, unless there is some reason why you'd prefer a Burris, I'd go with the Leupold. E

I have a straight tube Burris Mini 4x that was on a Win 94 30-30, it now lives on my 22 squirrel rifle and I really like it. Clear, light and compact. I also have a Leupold ultralight 2.5x I recently bought. I like the Leupold too but the Mini's can be had for less than 1/2 the price of the Leupold if price matters. I'd buy either again for a short to medium range woods rifle. Eye relief on the mini is fine for me as is the Leupold. Both have spent some time on a 45-70 and I never got scoped with either.

I'd have to say either would be fine but price dependant I'd go with the Burris...
