Sorry in advance!

I have a post mill savage 99E .243 and I never checked the barrel twist on it. I was going to pick up some bullets on the way home so I can work on some loads the next few days and basically the reloading shop is closer to my work than my house and I was wondering if anyone knew the barrel twist on the the Savage 99E .243? I was thinking 105gr Amax for big game and 75gr for varmints but it depends on twist and COAL for the rotary magazine.

Thanks!

On this same line, can someone explain why the heavier slugs don't stabilize well in the .250 Sav, but the .243 doesn't have a problem?

Most .250s are 1-14 twist.

Yep, pre-1960 99's in 250 were 1 in 14" twist, not fast enough to get heavier bullets to stabilize. As of 1960 they went to a 1 in 10" twist in 250's, which will stabilize longer bullets.

True fact.
If you ever want to see crazy stuff on a 50 yard target try throwing 120 grain bullets out of a pre mil 250 Savage.

They likely will be going sideways at 25 yards.

Switch to 87 grainers and they will shoot into one hole at 50 yards with open sights.

I like it here. They let me swear.

I'd I'm glad they didn't start with 1-10" still '60, that has saved me a bunch of coin.
