Hey G,
Not only that, if you take the square root of the hypotenuse, time the ballistic wobble and the sectional wiggle; you will find the the 30-06 will not handle the vortex of the hyper/elevation effect of shooting cross canyons of New Alberta and West Osbestustan. Of couse this is only applicable if the 280 is driven at speeds over 90 fps. sick

JO gives 30-06 owners a bad name.

I'm tellin you Bro. the 06 just does not work. Run the numbers. All them game animals shot all over the world died of heart failure. Poor diet or something. Brought on by the suddent shock for a lound noise or something.
If the 270 hadn't came along in the 1930, and the 7mm Express/280 in the 1980s we would all still be killin elk with a 30-30 like they did in the 1940's.

The only practical and real advantage to owning a 30/06 over a 280 Remington is 30/06 ammo is more commonly available here in the USA, and probably worldwide also. So if you lose or are out of ammo anywhere the odds are higher of getting a box of 30/06 over finding some 280 ammo.

Everyone does realize that the only way to determine whose claim is the truth in this (or any other matter) will be for somebody to post more pictures of dead animals than the other side, right?

Actually, I think that both will kill game. But if you aren't shooting .280 bullets that have a bc of at least .600, or you aren't using a Leupie scope and turrets, you have to immediately include yourself in the mentally inferior, godless great unwashed.

Your only ticket out would be to demonstrate the ability to quickly compose irritating limmericks. grin

John G: I've heard that said...Although it was twenty years ago about owning, or in my case not owning, a 7mm Remington magnum at the time.

At last!!! Finally someone was able to put it in the simplest terms that everyone can understand.

Actually, the 280 lacks the frontal diameter to be effective on game larger than small pronghorns, and the 30/06 suffers from inefficiency and too much recoil. There needs to be a cartridge developed in 29 caliber. It would have the killing power of the 30/06 and the recoil of the somewhat wimpy 280.
The B29 was a great try at doing that but suffered from too much parallax.

John G: IMHO big game rifles calibers matters less using the a good bullet in the appropriate weight, and the ability of the shooter to hit the chest area.

The guys two decades ago were just young men in their twenties who were full of themselves...

That would roughly correspond with what Shane reports, and dovetails with what my particular (22") 30-06 would do. I think. I know I can get 2860 with 180's, so....

The same program lists 180gr bullets going a max of 2800fps from the same 26" barrel...

Hey there Jordan, I missed this...

Well, this is where we get into the realm of what an individual rifle does or doesn't. My 30-06 has a Pac-Nor barrel and it's the only rifle I've ever owned that gives "book" speeds, with book charges of powder. Book says XX grains of H4350 gives XXXX fps, viola, there it is! Give or take, of course.

Since it's also a very accurate tube, I love that sucker!

In the original spirit of thread I have one of each. They are both superior to each other with all bullet weights under all conditions! wink
