Hello, Newbie here but not for long. I have an old Lyman Alaskan Scope that I was wondering if anyone has some info on. I have posted of photo of the turrets below. The reticle has a crosshair and a post that is tapered. The serial no. on the scope is 1473. Thanks .

Your scope is the earliest version of the Alaskan(1937- early 40's). It has the exposed windage/elevation turret adjustments. Later versions were the "all weather" scopes with turret adjustment caps. This scope has a 7/8" tube size. Hope this helps.

Can you back off and take a picture of the entire scope? As 3d said, this is an early model, with exposed turrets.
What are you wanting to know? Mounts? Vintage? Other mounts? Refurbishing?
PM me with all the markings if you don't want to publish them. I have a later model Alaskan on a custom Mauser in a Jaeger side mount, a WWII model A4 in Redfield rings on a 1903A3 Springfield, and an M82 on a Garand D.

Nice 3-digit Winchester 70!
What is it chambered for?
Early Winchester 70 and early Lyman Alaskan, could very well have been put together when new.

Jeff Chambered for a .257 Roberts.....NOT...I think 90% of the 3 digit guns are 06 and sadly this one is too.

It looks like a nice 1 and how many people can honestly (yes, I mean you Lee24) say that they own a 3-digit Winchester 70?

Nice! The sling and scope covers are all of the era. Unless the bore was totally black and rough as a coal mine, I would leave it as is. I love the look.
I cut my teeth on a rig like that, which belonged to a friend of mine's grandfather. I like the post and crosshair reticle. The old man had a Model 70 .220 Swift with a 12x Weaver and his wife had a .257 Roberts.
You can have the scope rebuilt, if you like. I am going to rebuild the one on the Garand and the 1903A3. The one on my .270 is still clear. It has a fine crosshair.

Thank you for reminding me of the four digit .270Win. chambered M54 I missed several years ago (SN12xx, IIRC, one of the first 500 .270Win ever factory made). Damn, that STILL hurts.
Doubt that scope was put on when "new", but not very long after, for sure.
Beautiful set-up.

Very nice rifle. The SN indicates 1936 manufacture date M70. IIRC, those were not D&T from the factory so the scope in these bases may have been added later. Although the scope and mounts seem to fit the period. The front ring on yours looks very much like the one on my 1938 manufacture M70 270 Win. The old left-side safety is a favorite location IMO.

Actually they were all drilled and tapped from the factory, just not on the rear bridge. They didnt start on the rear bridge until the early fortys I believe.
