I am tinkering with the idea of putting a scope on my Winchester Centennial 1866 30-30. I do not want any side mount and prefer a long eye relief scope that could be put on the barrel. I know what your thinking but I am just testing the water to see if someone has already done it and how. It is not drilled and tapped since it is a top eject model with saddle ring. Tom

I have one mounted on a 94 top eject. It has a mount that required removal of the rear sight and the back mounting point slides into the sight slot. The front of the mount attaches to the fore end barrel band (which your gun does not have). The mount was made by Leopold many years ago. Something of that nature may work for you. I don't know of anything like that being offered today so it would need to be special made and costly.

Check around on sleezebay and/or various gun auction sites.
In the 70's there was a clamp-on mount for Winchesters that straddled the barrel and mag tube just ahead of the rear sight that held a pistol scope in place above the barrel.
I'll try to noodle up the name & repost.

I think I know what you are referring to but that was for a round barrel and I have an octagon barrel. I know I can have a gunsmith flatten out the undersides of a Leupold mount and drill and tap but I just figured something new along the lines of the Scout mount that is currently available for round barrels only is now available for octagon barrels. Yes, I read in your OP that your gun has an octagonal barrel.
Good Luck.
