Seeing some of the photos from the called in coyotes in the hard woods made me wonder about giving it a try.

I looked at the MNDNR website and couldn't find any info on coyote hunting, season dates or license requirements.

Anybody here hunt them in Minnesota?

Haven't hunted them but here's the info from the 2008 MN DNR regs. Highlighting is mine.

UNPROTECTED ANIMALS
Residents and nonresidents are not required to have a license to take unprotected species including coyote. Nonresidents do not need a furbearer hunting license in addition to their small game license to hunt fox.
Unprotected Mammals
Weasels, coyotes, gophers, porcupines, striped skunks, and all
other mammals for which there are no closed seasons or other protection are unprotected animals. They may be taken in any manner, except with the aid of artificial lights or by using a motor vehicle to drive, chase, run over, or kill the animal. Poisons may not be used except in accordance with all label regulations of the state Dept. of Agriculture and federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Yup, unprotected. I don't hunt them much, and all of the coyotes I have gotten to date have been while I was hunting something else, or back when I used to spent more time in the rural part of the state and carried a truck gun.

It was MOGC' photos in the "called in" thread that got me thinking. I have always thought of coyote hunting as a plains game but when I look at his photos I got to thinking "that looks just like the woods I hunt".

And it's addicting!
It's quite an experience woods hunting for Coyotes.
For me at least, the initial learning curve was frustrating, getting busted more than not. Then things started clicking and coming together,i.e., figuring how they operate and what makes them tick.
Besides, the time I target them is usually Jan., after deer seasons to the end of March and I have the woods to myself.

Sounds nice out in the woods alone.

What do you do with a coyote or fox after you kill it? Leave it for the wolves?

The few that I do get, usually someone wants the pelt, including a black one I shot a number of years back. (What was I thinking, LOL)

Actually, my Muzzleloader Female I posted had such a nice coat, I'm having her rugged out and I'll post pics when I get her back.

Now a rug sounds very nice. What does it run to have somthing like that made up?

I can already imagine sitting out on a feb. day hunkered down with a mouth call in my favorite deer woods...

October and November are probably the best calling months, with December and January close behind. In February coyotes are beginning to seek mates and den sites and are pre-occupied and less predictable. Fur is beiginning to become less predictable too as coyotes rub when the weather warms in March. But you are right, the winter woods when all the deer, bird, and small game hunters are watching football is a special time to be out there. And once you've called a predator to the gun, look out, it is as addicting as any hunting sport I know of.

Is a good place to start if you get hides you want to keep.
