Hello all new guy here. My favorite would have be me recently purchased Browning M1000 Eclipse 270WSM. I took first blood with it this past deer season with hand loads, 100gr speer spitzer 52gr 4350, 3580fps. This is my favorite deer rifle for now that is I plan to purchase a Howa Varmit supreme Thumbhole in .243win.

The loading data I see shows a 270 WSM load for 100 gr bullets using over 60 grs of 4350. Is your 52 gr load correct? Is your velocity correct?

Why use a 100 gr hollow point .277" bullet on deer?

Welcome to the 'fire. Hope you enjoy your stay. I am a little puzzled by some of the data in your post, however. According to their website, Speer doesn't make a 100gr Spitzer in 270 caliber. The only 100gr 270 bullet listed is a 100 gr Hollow Point varmint bullet. Second, according to Hodgdon's website, 52gr of 4350 would be a pretty light load for a 100gr bullet, and the velocity would not be close to 3500fps. Maybe some typo's??

I have used a bunch of different guns over the years, and really have a fondness for the old Savage 99's;

but if I was really serious about shooting something, especially over 150 yards it has to be this one. 98 Mauser in 30-06 w/ 1-5 VXIII Leupold that I restocked. It just plain fits and works. I have lost count on how many deer I have shot with it.

Sorry for the confusion it was early and I was tired. I looked up my recipe its was a typo, 62grs is what I used. It is not a hollow poing its a spitzer they are no longer made, I got them from my father who had a box of them laying around. On that note why not use 100gr, I think it was a perfect mix clean kill not alot of damage. I have seen many deer killed with .243win using 80gr leads.

Thanks for the welcome

Yes typos indeed I had made, as mentioned 62gr load was correct. The bullet does indeed exist I promise just has been discontinued. The velocity that was estimated for the 4350 was 3480fps out of a 24inch barrel. I estemated 3580 out of the 26inch barrel on the M1000 Eclipse. When chronoed I actually got just a tad over 3500.

I figure I see more grouse than deer on most walkabouts, so this should be just the ticket to enjoy my time in the woods.

I've been wanting one of those. I have .22/410's in the safe and they probaly see more time in the field than any of my other guns. ditto on seeing more grouse than deer. A .30WCF/20ga would be perfect for the Alsea unit.

I looked in an old Speer Manual (#9), and it has the following to say about this bullet: "Speer originally marketed only the the spitzer soft point in 100grain weight; but increased interest in soft swaged, hollow point bullets led to the development fot the hollow point design. Both types are recommended for varmint loads.

IMO, using light-for-caliber bullets, which were designed for varmints, on big game (especially at 3500fps) is asking for trouble. If you want to use that light a bullet in the 270WSM for deer I'd recommend the 110Accubond or the 100TSX...they are designed for big game.

I originally wanted to use the 110TSX but had these on hand. I agree it is asking for trouble I was second guessing myself when I loaded them on how much damage they would create. I only say it is a good mix now after taking a deer. It was a clean shot through the heart at 98yrds and the exit wound was about 1.5 inches in diameter. I do belive I will save the rest for coyote and go with the 110TSX next season.

We think alike...some subtle differences but VERY close.

Nice wood on that 760!

My favorite has to be my Ruger M77 Mark II in 270 win. It shoots Gamekings under 1/2" with my reloads and will whack a deer quick.

This year I have a 300 Wby that needs some blood on it though.

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

Welcome to the fire!! With a handle like that, I'd be suprised if you posted anything else. I do like that Weatherby though. Good lick with it.

Nothing wrong with the 300 Savage at all. Is it in a "99" or a 110 Bolt?
