Couldn't agree with you more, Dober. Lots of folks out there who honestly believe you can't kill an elk with anything less than a .300 mag and that a .338 mag is really the better choice.

I know a few folks who have lost elk hit with a 7mm mag and decided then and there that it wasn't enough gun for elk and they went out and bought a .338 RUM or WM. Really, the only problem they ever had was hitting the poor animal in a non-vital area.

I've seen what a 6.5x.284 can do to a mature bull elk, and I'm a believer. I also know folks who regularly take elk with a .25-06, and they go home every year with one nice bull and one less .25-06 cartridge than they showed up with.

Although I've never personally shot an elk with the 6.5x.284, I did take a 14 7/8" speed goat with one at 397 yards up around Malta. Again, amazing performance from the round.

I often wish 6.5x284 or 6.5-06 rifles were commercially available with a decent selection of factory ammo. I think I'd own one if they were.

.264 is making a lot of sexy lists, and her inferior flashy cousin the .257 Weatherby.
