The Marlin XL-7s in 30-06 and XS-7 in 243 that I've shot have all shot very good groups and get the "260remguy Seal Of Approval" as a best buy in the economy CF market. They beat the Stevens 200 in everything except for the variety of cartridges that the 200s come chambered in. Once Marlin matches the variety of cartridges that Savage/Stevens chamber in the Stevens 200, they will be selling a better rifle for the same (+/-) price as the Stevens 200.
The bottom line is that if you buy a Marlin XL-7, I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well it will shoot. You might need to try a couple different factory loads to see what bullet weight and manufacture combination shoots the best groups in your rifle, but I pretty sure that you'll find that combination.
Cabela's was selling the XL/XS-7s about a month ago for $270, which is only about $20 more than small dealer wholesale.

I will also vouch for the accuracy in the .243, mine grouped 3 different loads under 3/4 inch while breaking it in. Havent tried any factory ammo but when a light new rifle shoots 58 Vmax, 85 Sierras and 100 gr Hornadys all under an inch with test loads with book oal's and powder charges, I reckon I can make the little bugger humm with some pet loads, I got my hunting buddy one in .270 but he hasnt shot it yet, but will report on his accuracy later, heck of a buy this little Marlin

I had an XL7 in 270 for a very short time. Tried it with six different loads. All went into 1.25" or less. Four were factory loads, two were gun-show reloads. Shooting buddy bought it from me for his wife that day. I still plan on replacing it. Great gun for the money. You'll be happy with it.
