Man who played father to me from the time i was 8 until contracted cancer last summer. tounge, throat and part of his jaw. never dipped, smoked nothing. The doctors wanted to take out half his mouth and run him on chemo. he declined and yesterday finally got fed up with the pain and everything else.
I went to see him last week and he was watching the cooking channel. food had lost all flavor and he had to take very small bites because his throat ws almost closed shut.
He and my mother dated for 12 years when i was a kid. he was there before i could even walk. In fact i thought he was my father till i was about 8. He's the man who first put a fishing rod in my hand, who first taught me to shoot. I learned to swim off his boat dock and rode on the back of his bikes.

I know few will say anything but I'll tread there. I'm truly sorry that you lost your friend. May he rest in peace.

I am sorry.

We only get a few real mentors in life. When they are gone - it leaves one feeling empty.

He's no longer suffering.

May the passing of time help you with your feeling of loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. I have always said I would do the same thing under those circumstances, but will always wonder if I have the courage until or if that day comes.

Again, sorry for your loss.

Ringworm,
Sorry for your loss!
Sounds like he was a good man and that you shared many fine experiences together.

It is a tough and personal choice .
After a bout with cancer 20 years ago I decided that it was not anything that I wanted to put my family and myself through again.

Condolences to you on the loss of a good friend .

He stopped by the house last summer after the Dr. appointment and said he'd put a gun to his head before he let them cut him to pieces. When i left the house last week I called my mother and told her that if she had anything she wanted to say to him she should get in touch (they had a falling out about 4 years ago).
I told my wife he wouldnt make it to the fall.
95% of people that met him would say he was the biggest prick they ever met. he was proud and arrogant and not one to mince words or hide opinions.
And he could back up everything.
He lived in the same trailer on the lake since 1970. The kind of guy that lives in a single wide but collects cars and guns and bikes.
Biggest choice of the day was to drive the V-12 benz or the 1971 ford PU. the PU usually won out.
Welders.... What can you do with them?

I am sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds as though he brought a lot to your life and I would bet that you also brought a lot to his. Best, John

that's a horrible decision for a man to be forced to make.
