A knife and fork has worked best for me.

I've hunted as many goats in Alaska as I have dinosaurs, so take this FWIW, but given what you have and where you're going, I'm not sure I've ever seen a man with a better excuse to buy a Kimber Montana....300 WSM down to 257 Bob should be dandy - I've got a soft spot for the 7-08 since mine has been so good to me.

Have a GREAT hunt, take LOTS of pictures, post them ALL here, with DETAILED HUNTING STORY...grin.

From the pics I've seen I doubt Shrapnel needs much advice when it comes to choosing a rifle. However, there is one bit of advice I think I can share.

If your climbing the mountain and it may not be that cold-even though the AM was on the chilly side-you may want to forgo the insulated undergarments. Don't ask me how I know.

It is highly unlikely that SE Alaska will be very cold in September, even on top of the 3500 ft mountains. It might snow, maybe... Even so, it won't be cold.

That's exactly what I found out, and climbing that "hill" made it even more obvious.

You guys are right, I usually use the lightest Capilenes or Smartwools thinnest, and a Nylon fishing shirt. I was glad for some insulation in October, though, as some of the mornings were chilly

I wish I had the pictures but Ive heard a knife will work too, combined with rope, and shooting the thing first. When I lived in Alaska I knew two guys who didnt carry enough ammo to finish the job on a goat. Mind you goats can take more lead than about any North American game. So there they were with a wounded goat and no ammo. They roped it and one guy held the rope while the other guy ran in and stabbed it. The goat put up a fight but the guy with the knife didnt get hurt. So the story went.
I was a teenager at the time so they may have embellished a little but I saw the pictures of the final product. I dont remember the details of the story like why they couldnt just wait for the thing to die, but I know in the mountains you dont always have the luxury of time.

Personally the 30-06 wouldn't be my first choice for a goat gun, especially in September. goats are much harder to kill than people think and the first thing they do when they feel threatened is go to the cliffs for safety. September hunts you are probably going to take a fairly long shot so you want a flat shooting gun that will break him down before he gets to the cliffs.

James Phillips

September is still warm in Southeast .Bring extra long underwear up the Mt. and change into it while you glass you will be sweating as you climb. Being dry is the key

With all due respect and more than one goat behind me... The 30-06 as a cartridge would be outstanding for any goat, anytime, anywhere...

Those that can't kill a goat with an -06, well no matter what you put in their hands, the gun won't solve the problem.

Shot one in September of 2008: .30-06 at 40yards. If the .30-06 will not kill Mountain Goats out to as far as I want to shoot, it will not be the guns fault. 2010 will see a .308W or 7mm-08.

I am not saying that a 30-06 wouldn't do the job I am saying that it wouldn't be my first choice . Having fifty or more goat hunts under my belt. I also have taken a goat at thirty yards with my 06 . Have also seen people shoot at them on cliffs at a distance with several different guns and a 7mm shoots flatter and killed goats much better than the 06 from a distance. When I was in my teens I got a 06 and used it hunting Southeast Alaska for every kind of game ,several of us had the same guns when we were young so saw lots of game shot with the 06. Only gun I had for over ten years. The 06 will kill a Brown bear but I wouldn't use it for back up on my Brown bear hunts and I don't think my clients would like it either. I will stick to my 375 for that. So again from my experience on goat hunting on Baranof Island for over thirty years 06 wouldn't be my first choice for goats if it was the only big caliber I had would use it .

Impressive credentials and therefore I will keep my opinions to myself since I only have 1 Mountain Goat hunt to base them on.
