The .444 is a fine cartridge but I'd get a .45-70 and, as someone else suggested, load to taste. I run mine with 300g hardcast over light pistol powder charges for 1167fps loads and less recoil than a .30-30 factory load to what I call my 'Rhino Blaster' loads - 460g hardcast @ 1812fps for about 48 foot-pounds recoil. My hunting loads are 350g at 2183fps and although my longest shot was a bull elk at 213 lasered yards, I'd reach out to 300 with it without concern.
That said, I like the idea of the .338 Marlin and wouldn't mind having one.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I would just get a 45-70 & load it to whatever specs you want. Plink around with light loads (Less recoil) & "Full Leaded" for when it counts.
IMO, the 2 rounds you mention don't measure up to the old standby. (This is all assuming you are using a lever action..) If not, you have many more choices.. months ago I would have said a 450Marlin... Now If you can find one I still do... but if not a 45/70 Snake

Either one will do you just fine, I would however bet on the 444 and 45/70 being around for a long time. But in all honesty I can't think that the 308 Marlin will always be around. If you're a handloader most likely not a big deal. However if your shooting factory then it may become an issue some day.
Personally, I'd go with the 444 or the 45/70.
