I have a Winchester model 70 with the BOSS system and am just starting to build up a load. I have a box of Hornady 225 grain Spire Point Interlock. The barrel is 24 inches then the BOSS starts. I hope to use these on my Moose hunt in October. I also have a box of 180 grain Spitzer Ballistic tip that I am going to load for Deer. Any one have any Pet loads ?
Here are my results of the first batch of reloads. Not happy so far with the results from the imr 4831. The first thing I had noticed was the max loads range from 69.8 - 78.0 gr,which brought the starting load according to one source almost at the max load according to another.
My heads - 225gr SP IL. I started off with 5 rounds for each load with cci and Winchester primers (wanted to use some Federal, still looking).
I wanted to have a starting goal so I brought a box of federal factory loads with the same head to compare. They had an average speed of 2,737 fps at 4' from the muzzle. I loaded 64,65,66, and 67 grains in each and speeds ranged from 2235 average for 64 grains to 2299 average for 67 grains with no noticeable difference in speed between the primers. No deformation of the brass also. One of the sources state that their max is 73.5 gr compressed so the next loads I don't think I should go beyond 73 gr for this powder. The next loads I will try for this powder will be 69,70,71 and 72 gr. all while watching for any indication of overpressure. The other powder I have to try is imr 4320. I am still looking for some imr 4350. I was looking to at least match the factory loads, we will see what happens. Any one have any other suggestions?

I would try to find any type 4350 or RL19 and you should get closer to the speeds you want to see. That bullet, however, will work just as well or better at lower speeds, especially if it encounters a big bone.

I would like to get at least "factory" speeds. All the rounds I shot landed within the 9 ring. I wasn't really concentrating too much for accuracy just trying to get the speeds of the rounds. I was suprised by the fact all the rounds with the different speeds were hitting in the "same" general area. I guess the "boss" system works. For the last few months I have been looking for the 4350 at all the gun shops in the area, I was 1 hour late at the Cabella's last Wednesday.

Jarv...............You have more than likely seen the Hodgdon data??

Their suggested starting load for IMR 4831 is 69 grains which gives 2637 fps @ 44,900 CUP. Max load lists at 73.5 gr of IMR 4831 giving 2805 fps @ 50,200 CUP.

Your loadings of 64, 65, 66, and 67 gr of IMR 4831 were under charged. Possibly the reason why your velocities are way down?

If you`re shooting factory 225 gr ammo and getting 2737 fps with no signs of pressure, there shouldn`t be any reason why the IMR 4831 cannot put you in that same ball park velocity range. If by chance IMR 4831 cannot match factory loads or come close (which I seriously doubt), then the IMR 4350 will likely not get you there either with a slightly faster burn.

As you state, start with a 69 gr loading, but work up a half grain at a time.

From what source did you see a maximum charge of 78 grains? What was their listing for a starting load? I do know that Hodgdon says 73.5 gr as a max and that is a compressed load.

I have quite a few books and the newest: Hornady 7th edition starts theirs at 58.2 and their max is 69.8. The 78 gr max compressed was from a Lyman 45 edition book, I had noticed that Hodg had 73.5 had their compressed load and would be watching closely as I approach that load. I started mine at the middle of all the data I had and went with that. With my next try I hope to be more in the ballpark. Thanks.

In your 338`s case, the info difference from these manuals has a wide disparity. Start at the 69 grains and just work up by 1/2 gr at a time until you start to see pressure signs, then back off a half grain and consider that loading as max for your rifle`s capabilities using IMR 4831.

Go by what your rifle tells you. The reloading manuals are just guidelines and by no means absolute.

I have two .338WM A-bolts with the BOSS. The load I worked up for the one I took moose hunting in 2007 was 70.5gr IMR4831,CCI BR2 primers and the 225gr TSX. MV was 2775fps and was (is) very accurate.

My moose didn't know what hit him.

The powders I would use would be IMR4831, 4350, and RL19. There is no reason you cannot increase the load until you get to 2700 fps or so.

Thanks to all. I will work with the 4831 some more and list the results as I get them.

Isn't that a bit close? At what distance does everyone else measure MV?
I usually measure at twelve ft.

I have 2 rifles in 338 WM - love the caliber. One is a Tikka T3 SS with 600mm barrel, Magnaport and Limbsaver pad. The other is a custom built on a Carl Gustav commercial action with 24" Douglas premium barrel and presentation fancy maple stock.

The best load in the Tikka was also the best in the custom Gustav:

72.3grs H-4350
CCI 250
WW brass
Nosler Accubond 225grs
Tikka OAL: 3.48" - .008" from rifling
Gustav OAL: 3.47" - .010" from rifling
Both group .75 MOA or less up to 400 yards - 95% of the time

The 225 Interlock is my favorite bullet in .333wm. I push them with 75 of RL19. They work perfect on everything from elk to whitetails and hogs. The only thing that would make me change to a different bullet would be griz and I would go to a 250 NP.

I once lent my Chrony to a friend for the weekend, I was told later they set it up at 6ft from the muzzle of a .300 Wby mag and a .338-378 Wby. They just couldn't seem to keep the Chrony together without the pieces flying away. I measure all our reloads at 15 ft and doing so will keep one from damaging the Chrony.

I use R-19 with the 210 Partition and have used it with 225's. It seems to get the highest velocities and I have never beaten it for accuracy with the 210's.

I also get good velocity and outstanding accuracy with R-22 and 225 Hornady's [NPT's too FWIW]in my 23 in barrel Model 70. I use 76 grains FWIW. Max when I developed the load was 77 gr.

RL 19 is the way to go for the .338. It flat performs, and is accurate as heck.. Easy to work with also.

Since all the Reloader powders have been kinda hard to get in the last year I have been playing with loads of AA3100 in my 338s. Cuts the velocity back some but I'm having some great accuracy results

I'm fully aware that to recommend a bullet other than a Barnes here on the Fire is considered sacrilidge but....
My "go to" load for my .338 Mag. is 73 grs. of Rldr-22 and a 225 gr. NorthFork. That load gets 2800 fps and about 1-1 1/4" groups. I have sitting on my desk right now a NorthFork that originally weighed 225grs. I pulled it out of the last moose I shot and it has a picture perfect mushroom & weighs 217 (or 218 grs. - I forget). The bullet struck behind the left front shoulder & we picked it out under the hide of the right rear quarter. MOre expensive? Yup!! But what's performance worth to you? Use your 225 gr. Hornady's for accurate load work up (that's what I did) then drop the powder charge by about 8% and work back up to your accurate velocity with the NorthFork. That's it in a nutshell. Ya won't be disapointed.
Good luck, Bear in Fairbanks
