I'm planning to have a working DGR built in 404 Jeffery. I'm thinking of basing it on a Win M70 Classic currently chambered in 300 RUM. IMO it would give me a CRF system and magazine rails already configured to the 404 Jeffery case dimensions to start with. Bottom metal, follower, barrel, stock would all be replaced. I know this isn't the 'classic' route of using a Mauser M98, but seems like a good idea.

Any ideas pro or con on this approach? Suggestions on GSs in the WA, MT, ID area that would handle this well?

I'd contact Matt Williams (triggerguard1, here at the 'fire) about the bottom metal and follower.

The barrel ought to be just a simple rebarrel, as the RUM actions are .404 length as they are (IIRC).

Stock, would be a call to McMillan, and you're good.

Pac-Nor should be able to easily handle the barrel for you; and sending the barreled action after rebarrel to McMillan gets you stocked and bedded.

Shouldn't be that hard.................

The M70 should be fine, the real issue is the magazine. Check with Duane Wiebe or Sunny Hill for the correct units. I used Sunny Hill for a Mauser I am building. You still have to shape the rails and follower on that, on your M70 I would start with the follower. Your smith should know where to go after seeing how the feed.

Contact Jim Dubell of Delta Gunshop and he also owns Clearwater reboring. He is a fantastic metal man. I believe his prices are in line with other reputable smiths. www.deltagunshop.com

Delta Gunshop built my .338 Federal, and I liked their work and attitude a lot. If I wanted another .404 Jeffery, I would buy a Win M70 in .300 RUM and have Jim Dubell turn it into a .404. A friend of mine has one, and it works like a champ.

A CZ 550 action in 375 H&H should work with minimal modifications and give you an extra round in the magazine.

I already have a CZ 550 in .404 Jeffery... smile. But if I had it to do over I would convert a Win M70 in .300 RUM to .404 Jeffery.

Thanks Dennis. I'm about 1 hour south of Jim and travel to Colville regularly. Think I'll stop by Delta next time I'm there and have a conversation about the project.

Well, broke down and bought a used M70 in 300RUM for a pretty good price. Called Jim Dubell today and started talking details. Choosing a stock maker for a classic wood stock is the next item on the list. Anyone have any experience with Gary Gowdy's stock work?
