Speaking of Mister O' Connor I need to get back to hunting his books up that I've not read yet. Right now I'll go shoot my 270 at the range and wish there was a sheep in the distance instead.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Wouldn't his comparison between the two, Win 70 and Ruger 77, have been something to behold? I don't think so....He'd tell it like it is.....The Ruger m77 IS a workhorse and so is the model 70......Some people just can't get past the Rugers receivers being cast...Big FN deal......
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Guys,
I just received my copy of Gun Digest 2013 in the mail. I've only had time for a quick peek at it but it sure looks like a great edition. The new editor, Jerry Lee, has done a stellar job with it. There is plenty of coverage of Jack's last rifle, along with a sidebar on the Jack O'Connor Hunting Heritage and Education Center in Lewiston.

Around 1980, I was reading all of JOCs stuff I could find, and decided I needed a .270. I found a willing retailer and he ordered one up, back when another $10 would get you a "hand-picked" stock from one of the big distributors. It was a Ruger 77R, and it DID have some awfully pretty wood on it. The dealer also had those steel triggerguards/floorplates that Ruger made for the .458s, so I bought one of those to go with the nice wood. Ruined me for life, I have been a .270 fan ever since, and killed a traincar load of deer with it, and it's follow-ons, also .270s.
You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.

Remember at the time the rifle was ordered the Classic Model 70 was not in existence and JO'C and Bill Ruger were pals.
