I thought maybe you bent down and talked softly to the turret assem like........."come on, we can do it" or some other inspirational message..............maybe a series of children's books....."The Little Turret that Could..... Watch your email for incoming......I'll send pics of the group fired after my inspirational conversation with the reluctant little M8 4X.(AZshooter wanted to know how I fired little groups with that wimpy little 4X)....and the largemouth I caught last Sunday...ha! In truth folks are right...they can be a PITA to adjust sometimes...but once adjusted,they are the Pitt Bulls of the scope world

Back in the 1970's when I was even poorer, a M8 4X was the only scope I owned, so when I started shooting metallic sihlouettes it was my sihlouette scope. With the nonclick adjustments I was able to change my elevations for many matches and countless practice sessions. Not idea but it taught me trust fixed power Leupolds.

I would expect a Leupold to have a better adjustment system than this. I was thinking each mark was a 1/4". Needless to say I had some problems with sighting in. And now we find out! All those years using the darned things, before internet, and now we learn this!!! Yeah, I still use them; haven't even upgraded yet; can still find the old stock reasonably used. (Don't you just hate those rifles that don't get shot for months, and then, while checking the sights, you discover that there is no good reason to shoot more rounds except to hear the gun bark? Leupold (old) fixed powers...Phphht!)

Thanks for the pics, sweet looking mod 70 and a super chunk LM.
The only thing I didn't care for with the friction adj was that they felt a little springy (if that's a word) or spongy when you turned them. IOW, they felt like they wanted to spring back a little when you turned em.

I have one on my .35 Whelen. Each one inch mark on the dial tends to move impact 2 inches on the target at 100 metres. It's pretty consistent though so I know half an inch on the dial equals an inch at 100 yards. Once I remember that (and I usually do at the range - duh!) it's quite consistent.

RD,they do feel like they want to spring back.I learned to ignore it.I dunno but I think they were deliberately built that way to keep them from moving around much.They stay in one place really well.
The M70 is on its' second barrel;Brown Pound'r stock.I've had it about 15-20 years,can't remember.....

Wow, this topic really brought out some opinions. I was shooting mine on a Ruger RSI 250 savage that I just bought. It looks perfect on that rifle and I plan on leaving it there.

Curious here.. Did the M8 4x come in two different tube lengths?
I bought one off the classifieds here on 24 Hour, and it has a long tube.

Actually the M8 4x came in several sizes over the years. The two basic ones were the 4x28 with a long tube, and the 4x28 Compact with a short tube (and actually about a 3.5x). Then the long-tube model was changed to a 4x33 and given a somewhat shorter tube, though not as short as the Compact, and the Compact was supposedly turned into a rimfire scope, though it still works fine on a centerfire.
The "regular" size has always weighed around 9.5 ounces, give or take a little, and the 4x Compact normally weigh 7.5 ounces.
But Leupold has done some other stuff with the M8 4x's over the years. At a gun show last year I bought what was apparently an older model of the 4x28 Compact, but it is a little bigger than all the others I've seen, and weighs 8.5 ounces. Maybe an early Compact?
The older, long-tubed 4x28's are just about perfect for mounting on rifles like Savage 99's and Ruger No. 1's where the action is a little far forward.

Long action Model 70s too and about anything you don't want extended bases or dog leg rings on. With Weaver top mount rings and bases they might be as light a 4x scope & ring combo as there is. Not good looking by some shooter's standards but on most hunting rifles they still get it done.

Yeah, I have noticed that about 3x's over the years myself.
I even have a really old 3-9x Vari-X II in my collection, one of the first variables Leupold made in the early 1960's. The reticle doesn't stay centered during adjustment! It doesn't go very far off, but it's noticeable. I asked the head info guy at Leupold about it and he's the one that told me how old it was, and that they only made them that way for a couple of years.

You should put that old Vari-X II on a NULA so you won't need to "off center" the reticle much.
