My cousin owns one of these that he bought used in 1949. I cleaned it up for him, looks to be in about 80% shape, and has a nice, unbranded, receiver mounted competition peepsite on it. What can anyone tell me about these rifles? Thanks, Odessa

Yes, I can steer you in the right direction after spending time doing research on my Stevens 418

First, not sure what the "X" means, but heres scoop on the 416.

It was a bolt action 22 made for the US Gov't for training, and should be marked US Gov't as well. They were very accurate guns, as were most high end Stevens at the time--Pope H Pope of Pope barrels worked at Stevens just before WWII and so they knew how to make a good barrel.

It will refer you to John Callahan, THE independent Stevens historian. You must mail him a letter (no phone calls except to discuss his fees first) and he will give you a notarized letter on the history of your gun--it will take about a month.
He will also tell you, correctly, that the Stevens archives burned in a fire many years ago for exact records, but I think you will be happy with the info he can give you--I was.

Steve, thanks for the info. The "X" comes from a mark on the barrel: "STEVENS X BARREL" The "X" has a circle around it; I assume it must be a target barrel indication.

Model 416
This is a target rifle chambered for the .22 LR cartridge. It has a 24" heavy barrel with aperture sights. It features a 5-round detachable magazine and is blued, with a target-type walnut stock.
