Took the rifle to a local smith specializing in accurizing.
He says he has had a number of these rifles over the years. So, he's going to bed the action and first inch of barrel, float the barrel and recrown the barrel.
Sounds like he knows what he's doing. Looking at some of the competitive targets he's shot, I'd say he can definitely build a good rifle.
All this is getting done pretty cheaply to boot.
This sound like a good route to go to you guys?

You might shim up the action with a piece of credit card to get the barrel off the stock and shoot it that way before do the bedding. That will usually tell you if floating and bedding will help---or you can just leave the shim in and use the gun.
I do not like front end pressure points. They are just waiting for climate changes which usually mean poi changes.

I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

I've just finished tweaking my Rem 673 (based upon a model 7 action). The speed bump always bothered me, so I put it in an HS Precision Sporter stock and floated the barrel. Before that, I was shooting 1.00-1.75 inch groups at 100 (I'm no great marksman). I made my first range trip yesterday and was happy with the results. .75 to 1.50 inch groups without the flyers I used to see. In fact, my first three at 50 yds, after adjusting for the point of impact change from replacing the stock and floating the barrel (2 inches by the way) were one ragged hole. I think you'll be happy with your decision.
