Has anyone used an aperture sight, such as the XS Ghost Ring, on a Ruger No. 1? Any other aperture sights? How's it work?

I have to admit that I am pretty much of a scope man anymore on my rifles.

However I think that you will find the NECG rear peep sight for the ruger scope base something to look at. A friend lent me his NECG peep last week just to try out you know. I was ok with the thing, thinking of ordering one myself and a NECG masterpeice banded ramp to go on my 22 rimfire.

One nice thing about the NECG unit is its ease of mounting, nothing to do other than bolt it on the existing Ruger scope base feature. Not sure about matching the front sight height etc yet, but NECG has a lot of front slip in sights for their products as well as the factory banded front sight.

I have seen some very elaborate peep systems on No.1's but most involved some drill/tap work on the firearm.

I have used the NECG sight quite a bit on No. 1's, in particular a .375 Tropical Rifle that I took to Botswana and used on an safari in 2003. It's an elegant sight and didn't require a new front sight, but adjustment is a little bit of a PITA. Once it gets where it needs to go, however, it stays there!

I have used the XS Ghost ring for the Ruger No.1. I like the sight picture better than the NECG Ruger sight, I dislike the fact that you can not easily mount a scope with the XS sight since it replaces the two rear screws in the Ruger rib.

XS is the only way to go!
and yes, the front will be somewhat taller (slightly caliber-dependent as well as dependent on the ring size you choose).
the rear replaces the rear set of screws on the quarter rib.

I knew ants could lift many multiples of their own body weight, but that damn yellerjacket takes the cake.

the reason those pictures even exist is that the gun was leaking bluing salts out from under the barrel band and the receiver ring under recoil
(look closely and you can see it). The yellowjacket was all over the salt.

Ruger tried unsuccessfully 3 times to correct this and on the fourth attempt they comped me a wood upgrade:

Is the Williams a "drop in" or did you have to re-thread?

Drop in; the NECG uses standard threads. You just need to make sure you've got the shorter version; there are two lengths.

You do need to make sure you don't go a lot bigger than what NECG uses for its bigger aperture though (it comes with two). If you do, you may find that the aperture begins to get flat on the sides as the trough machined in the sight forward of the aperture is somewhat narrow.

If you want one of these NECG numbers, I have a rear sight and front sight set that I can send off to you. Just a matter of coming up with a fair trade or price.

Had to resurrect this thread in the hopes I could get some info on the above rear sight. XS doesn't appear to have that style anymore. Anyone know where they can be had??

All I found on their site are receiver sights that require drill and tap. These ones in the pictures are slick!

I agree XS is the only way to go.

The new NECGW sight looks like it has separate, independent, adjustment screws. If so, it is a great improvement over the earlier models in which the side to side adjustment was also the tightening screw for the mount to the rifle. That system was far less reliable when you used the peep as a backup.

The 'ears' also offer some protection from outside thumps n bumps.
