Savage 1895/99 Orginals still in Existence In North America". Where do I go?
you guys were discussing CNC and investment castings, my bad?! shocked

Not your bad.. this thread has wandered everywhere. Started out as a way to get a rough idea of how many 99's were represented by the folks here. Now it's main function is as a welcome thread..

But, to be true to protocol.. a new discussion on a topic should have a new thread.

What should I do with my 99E? It is all original to the best of my knowledge. Never restocked or blued. Has original mounts and sights although the rear is missing the elevator. I would say the bluing is at worst 95%. Normal wear. Stock has no danage other than wear.

Took it out to the range today, and shot it with open sights and it did pretty good with factory loads.

Would anyone touch this to "fix it up" or leave it as is.

Touch up a 95% rifle? Never. Put a scope on it and hunt. Not a lot of collector interest in 99E's, but they usually shoot just fine.

I have a Model 99G Takedown, in 300 Savage. Made in 1937. Not drilled for scope or sling. All original with matching numbers on forearm. Also have a .410 barrel for it purchased later. trying to get another forearm for it so I don't screw up the original.

Hi,
Dad bought a .303 Savage Savage Model 99 with 6 or 8 boxes of Soft
point ammo in plain boxes in 1941. Bought direct from Savage, I believe.
How would I determine the value of this rifle? It has not had 100 rounds through it, has not been modified or tapped and has a light scratch on the reciever.

Could anyone provide the ballistics (trajectory data) for common bullet
weights of the .303 Savage?

Would someone care to guess the bullet weight of the factory Soft Point
ammo? It is stamped .303 Sav S A Corp.

Don't know much about vintage ammo.. but if it dates from 1941, I wouldn't shoot it. Worth something.

If you want ballistics for modern bullets and powder, let me know what you're shooting and I can provide a ballistics chart. Most of us reload 303 Savage ammo up to 30-30 standards using 30-30 bullets, and so the ballistics will be right on with the 30-30. Can't find good hunting 190gr jacketed bullets any more, but the 170gr work very well.

Savage Packed all Ammo for a While in Plain Garyish Boxes and then Transferred them to the Plant where Finial Packed,,On those Boxes ther may or May not Be Some Number in Ink Stamped either on the bottom or side.

As far as Value,,Photo's Would Help,,But the gun sounds as if it is a Family heirloom,,,so I will say Priceless for that Fact.

I have a Model 99 Takedown that based on serial number info was made in 1927. Great shooter and great looking rifle too. Here are a few pics.

When I first got it the action was sticking and would not allow the bolt to RTB. Had a gunsmith go over it and nice and smooth now. Only thing wrong that is visible is that the little tab or handle that is used in the takedown notch is missing. I have looked for a replacement to no avail.

Glad to have found this site.

OK, at long last formal introductions are in order. I now have in my possession my grandad's 1899 Savage .303. Has been in my mom's closet for decades now.

20 inch round barrel
Carbine butt plate
16 inch straight stock with straight schnoble
Blade in dovetail on raised ramp
Stamped "Savage 1899 Model"
Serial number corresponds to 1924 build date

So it would seem its a 99H? "transitional" since it is stamped "Savage 1899 Model"?

Here are all the pics. Its funny, the closeups and flash make it look horrible, and I guess maybe it is. In general it appears to be in good shape. I will get it cleaned up by someone who knows what they are doing.

Any comments/thoughts are welcome. Much larger/higher res photos available if necessary. Great forum, thanks.

Don't worry about the 1899 stamp and forget the transitional, it's a model 99H. The 1899's stopped around 1921, the 1899 stamp was on there for quite a while and has nothing to do with the model name. Once that's cleaned up, take it out to the range. You're going to like the way it handles.

You can use 0000 steel wool and gun oil to clean it up. Or Flitz with a very fine cloth will clean it up fast.

Use white Scoth Brite with oil (if you can find it). Last time I got some, I bought a box at an industrial supply store.

Hey folks,
1st post. I just got this 99 from my brother Mon. Been in th family for ever,it was great-granddads,granddad hunted with it till '55 when he bought a Marlin and put this one up. Shot it some today as we've pulled it out and done every few years since I was old enough to shoot it. My little brother had for th last ten years or so and I asked if I could hunt with it this year and he brought it down, he hunts mostly with a camera these days, told me to take custody,I did. Got a lot of questions bout loadin for it but I'll start another thread bout that. If that 'savage99' site is right it was made in 1911, it looks old but it's been care for to some degree for th last 30 years that I know of.
So here is one more. In 30-30.
I didnt read th whole 52 pages so....is there really a count?
Anyway, here's some pics....if I can do this right.

Matt,

The count died a while back... the gun is an 1899B... looks nice! Might be a reblue but that won't effect the value to YOU as it was great granddad's gun. Front and rear sight are correct! Glad to see it stay in the family!
