Hi, I had no idea Savages had such a stong following to warrant an entire forum thread. Anyway, my dad has a Savage that he shot his first elk with which would have been around 1954-1957ish. He thinks it is a 99e, I was wondering if the experts might have some additional thoughts. He put a new recoil pad on it, and a more recent scope so it has been modified a bit.

The pics are a little crappy, I'll see if I can get him to get me some better ones.

Welcome to the forum! That's a model 99EG made in about 1950 if I'm reading the serial number correctly. The scope, sling studs and recoil pad aren't original, unfortunately. Still makes a great hunting rifle, I use an identical one from 1945.

Just wondered if anyone might have a safety slide for one of these old girls? Mine has the square hole in the end of it, and there was something in that hole, but I don't know what. It was a pretty well trashed out, rusted up 300, that was never fired, but left to rust! The bore is perfect, I have the frame nearly restored, but the barrel on the outside is really pitted badly. The stock & forend are 100% perfect. What a shame! I'd love to find a barrel also. Can you change barrels in these guns, say my 300 to a 250-3000 without jumping through a lot of hoops? thanks, & glad to be part of the forum, Jake

Welcome:

Nice gun. Are those white spacers under the grip cap and behind the butt plate? What do you know about that?

Welcome Jake and Baker 6x6

Jake,

Start a new thread.

Baker, take those terrible white line pads off that gun and throw them out... as for the number... we lost track and stopped adding long long ago... it has sort of defaulted to a newbie post location but it really should probably get "un-stickied" as we are starting to get quite a few stickies...

It must have been a local-thing (NW Pa.)... I know my grandpa's gun has them, not sure about my mom's..

My father recently gave me his 99 that was bought new by his father. It is a saddle ring carbine in 303 cal. Ser#121xxx. I believe it is in the 1910-1915 vintage. I first deer hunted with it nearly 50 years ago. The saddle is still there but the ring was removed long ago. The wear mark from the ring is there. My guess is my grandfather cut it off to reduce noise.

TJW welcome to the forum. I believe Steds and rings are available if you want to put it back to original.sounds like you'have a good one there.manufactured in 1912.have you still got ammo for it? I think norma is making 303 savage brass now.

Thanks, yes I have ammo. 2 rather old boxes that I will save and a couple of newer boxs. I also believe that Buffalo Arms has brass, they have most everything else. I also have the Marbles peep sight that my grandfather had on it that my dad removed but saved. The original sights are still intact. Very interesting forum with knowledgable people glad I found it.

I have had a number of Savage 1899s and 99's over the years. I still have several but one in particular is special. I bought it as a shot out takedown made in 1917. It was rebarreled by Henry Cheatham and along the way we began to discuss building it as an interchageable barrel gun in 250 Savage, 22-250 and 300 Savage. Henry did the work and it came out with scopes and a mount that is matched to each caliber and load.
Henry built the mount to use the stock holes and contours of the receiver to spread the recoil instead of drilling new holes in a slim receiver. He said he would never build another one.
He built one for himself as he built mine and after his death it was sold for over $5000. Only my kids will have to worry about what mine will bring.
I'll try to pull it out of the safe and take some pics. I got the idea from an article in an old issue of "Rifle". I don't use mine for a truck gun like the author did.

The 22-250 on a 1917 receiver/bolt worries me, since the pressures from a 22-250 are something like 25% higher than a 250 Savage. Would LOVE to see pictures though.
