so why would you pick a shot action cartridge to save 1/4" and then add 4 inches to the barrel try to make it into a 6.5/06?
And using 8 or 10grain less powder per shot saves you maybe 3 or 4 cents?
The 260 is a great little cartridge, probably close to perfect for deer, IMO. Don't see the need to try to make it something that it is not. aww good questions... the 26 inch one is a Rem VLS I picked up when they came out...got it in trade for a Marlin 44 Mag Carbine that didn't shoot for squat..with a guy who ordered the 260 VLS and when it came in he was expecting a Model 7..he ordered the wrong catalog number... so it worked out beautiful for me..got rid of a rifle I didn't want, and got a rifle in a caliber I was wanting...liked it so much then, I bought a Ruger 77 in 260 Stainless... and then bought another on close out for $300.00 NIB...

gS custom makes a 100 grain 25 with a .45 ballistic coefficient which when thrown at 3450 would be a good enough ballistic coefficient to make the 25-06 down right evil. And boy is it a downright evil. I have been using GS Customs in 25-06 and .223 for deer. Great little bullets. 3450-3475fps in 25-06 and 3800fps in .223. Great killers. Nice BC and trajectory also.

kyle are you shooting the 85 or 100 grainers. The 100 grainers are advertised at needing a 1 in 9 twist. Have you tried them in a 1 in 10?

55g N160 seated at the lands, averaged 3437 fps and 0.502 inches for 4 -3 shot groups. I know you arent supposed to claim an precise load without shooting 5 shot groups, but I felt I had my load when it shot that well for me. 54g shot in the 6s, but only 3370 fps average. I was able to get 3500fps with H414, but precision was only about .9. I took precision over velocity with my final load and stayed with N160.
N160 won over Varget, H414, IMR/H4350. I havent tried any slower powders.

Has anyone tried RL17 with any of the 100gr bullets? I hit 3390 today with my 25-284. 100gr NBT and RL17.. 21inch tube.. You should be able to smoke 3400 with a 24 inch 25-06 RL17..

alright guys here is what I found out when I ran this load over my pro chrono digital. I was using re-22 and cci primers in win brass with 100 grain nosler solid base bullets. My hornady book said 58 grains was max so I started with 55 grains and found a 3100 fps velocity. I worked up looking for stiff bolt opening, flattened primers, case stretching, and marks on the case. At 59.4 grains I was at 3371 so I knew I was getting close. At 3421 I knew I had to be over pressure even though there was no bolt lift problems I didn't have flattened primers and I didn't have a mark on the case head. I decided to reload that case as many times as I could to see how many times the case would take it. At 4 shots I had stretched from 2.484 to 2.490 I still had tight primer pockets. However I did have a bright mark about a third of an inch on the case head. I take this as a sign that my gun won't that load. I am now off to the range to try out some of these loads. Has anyone else ever gotten a bright mark on a case when loading up rounds? How ridiculously high do you think my pressures were?

That bright mark is telling you the brass is flowing into a recess in the bolt face and is then getting smeared when the bolt turns on opening.
Too hot.
Back off and quit pushing things to hit some arbitrary number if you value your eyes.

Back off and quit pushing things to hit some arbitrary number if you value your eyes. This is correct. Another item is the bolt lift. Never wait for it, nor expect it. I have a .30/06 featherweight that will never stick no matter how hot the load. I know that now so use the chronograph moer and more to determine maximums in conjunction with traditional methods. In the case of the .25/06, barrel length is teh easiest way to increase velocity and if that is not enough, there is the ability to rechamber to .257 Roy, then .257 Westerner (8mm Rem Case). JW

what is involved in rechambering to a .257 roy. I gather the bolt will have to be turned by a gunsmith. I will probably need a new barrel to?

I am getting 3423 with 55.9 grains of imr 4831 under a hundred grain nosler solid base. No pressure signs and it flattened the deer that I shot with it. So fast I saw the deer fall before I felt the recoil. It also shoots .5 or .6 in my gun..Speer published this load in one of their books as max near 53,000 cup.
load development almost done..
