While talking to Leupold this evening on the way home from hunting, I gave my often expressed request for a 3x Long Tube.
This time I was given an answer that there is a good chance it will be offered initially as a custom shop option to get a feel for customer response. If things go as planned it can be expected sometime in 2010, and introduction will be preceded by a magazine article. I'm guessing in time for hunting season.
There was no request for the info to be off the record, so I'm passing it on. Those here who have said they would buy one or two just may have the chance to put the money up. OK, going to have to embarress myself, what is a 3x long tube, why would it be so popular?

Mabye not entirely a bad idea, M1s, might be better equipped than many rifles that were used in war long ago.....

3x fixed power scope with no front bell. Tube is noticeably longer than the 2.5x and fits long actions mo better.

Long tube as per the older ones, or shorter tube?
I believe it all when I see them for sale at a reasonable price.

Why is the old long tube 3x better than say a 1x4 or the 2.5x other than the tube being longer?
I've owned all three at on time or another and was pleased with all of them.

The Leupold rep said the length would be right around 11inches.

Why is it that a lot of people who post here, and profess a deep love for the 6x42, get excited about the 3x with a straight tube?

Looks just right, and kinda why I dug one of my 3x's out of the safe, and is ready for mounting. Hopefully the mailman brings the Effect in time for a range session next weekend. You shot your .222? If you're in the area the weekend of the 19&20, there's a gunshow in Wasilla. Jeff

Because it's an incredibly versatile hunting scope, by virtue of both its optical qualities, and its physical construction i.e it's tough as nails, and it'll mount ergonomically to virtually any action under the sun. I could hunt a lifetime with those two scopes. Might have to throw in a few 2-7x though

Yep, me too. But my alternate would be the Zeiss Conquest 4x. I do like them.

Half of the scopes I own are either 3x or 6x42... And it is quite a few scopes...
