i am considering the purchase of a kerosene heater...
others have mentioned propane...
what is the safest, electricity independent, home heating auxiliary equipment available???

Ditto +1000 I would NOT use a kerosene heater in a house.. Those things SMELL...

We heat with wood and do not have power in our home. Don't feel the need for a backup. When the weather gets bad and others do without our stove still heats, the wood cook stove still cooks and the oil lamps still light up the house.
The first time I shot myself in the head...

i'm not going to have a woodstove... for a lot of reasons...
i want something that i can put in a box and pull out when i need emergency heat...
some have mentioned propane, i've always believed that kerosene was more efficient... didn't realize that any freestanding, unvented, combustion type heaters were considered safe for indoor use til recently...
cost might figure in, but safety, ease of use, and storage will be the deciding factors....

Blanket. Or install a woodstove and realize some of us have been through this drill before...
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Heating my home with my woodstove right now. The forced air furnace is my backup. Here too.. I use maybe 30 gallons of fuel oil per year.. I burn 4-5 cords of wood and that keeps this place toasty all day/night long.. I figure it costs me about $700/year - total.. If I used fuel oil it would be three times that, easy... And not nearly as warm-feeling as a good radiant wood stove.. It's four feet away from me as I type this and my left side is getting PLENTY hot..

I used kerosene and/or propane when I rented a house & didn't have a choice. When I built a house 4 years ago it was all electric. Earlier this year I added on to the house mainly so I would have a place for a woodstove and not be totally dependent on electricity for heat.
I am not convinced that any unvented heater is safe.
Finding undyed 1K kerosene can be a PITA in this area. The dyed 1K (red) kerosene is not fit to put in a unvented heater. Propane is cheap until the weather turns cold and you need it , then the price goes up.

Those things SMELL... thats my experience aswell......had a pipe freeze and burst in the basement of the newspaper a couple years go near as we can figure on Friday night.....by Monday morning there was 4 foot of water in the basement and the furnace was toast....took a few days to get a new one....used a kerosene heater that stunk horribly.....can still smell it 3 years later when the printer that was closest to it fires up and runs for awhile.....dont care if they are more efficient, rather spend more to avoid the smell...

How about a good sweater?  the girls constantly ask why i dont turn up the heat, keep telling them if they aint willing to wear socks around the house they aint that cold

I"ll plus the wood stove once more. Use it as main and we have heat pump/heat strips as a backup...
But the issue is the woodstove never needs a backup.
IF i just had to have something else, I'd install a gas wall heater and VENT it out... portables I just don't care for. They are not safe in the end.
