The 40 caliber XD has worked well for me for several years. It is my favorite polymer framed pistol.

You can get it in more calibers, and even with or without manual thumb safety, magazine disconnect, night sights, full size or compact.

The sigma comes in 9 or 40cal, a couple of different color frames, blued or stainless slide and that's about it. Feels very cheap in my hand.

these are all fair and good points noted above, but I must add that the ergonomics for the Sigma are actually excellent even when compared to a couple of Sig-Sauers, Beretta 92 Brig & 3rd series S&Ws that I also own and like. Most feed back from owners is positive on the Sigma VE series. It is a less costly option with a very heavy double action trigger that takes some getting used to, but it also helps you to become a better shooter, and with use the trigger gets very smooth-not really lighter but certainly nice and smooth. Trigger is not good as a Glock's for sure, but even so it is certainly worth a look and if the sights are lined it will shoot point of aim for me always. Mine has fired lots of practice ammo without any trouble and it favors the 180 hollow points by Rem. I Think I will get a olive drab 9mm (9GVE) in the future.

A Browning Hi-Power in .40 cal. is a GEM. Others may be smaller for carry ... but this slim-profile pistol DOES carry well.

That aside, it is such a great pistol, for what it IS ... I would forever keep mine over most all of my other 24 or so handguns.

New to the forum.

Love my Sigs (have a 229 in .40) but I have to say that my XD Tactical .40 is a little more accurate. I seems that I like the Sig better in dry fire practice but the XD outshoots it on paper. I seem to find myself gravitating more to 9mm and .45 Auto, and see more of both in my future before anymore 40s

I can't believe all the people mentioning all the DAO pistols, I know they are the rage, from now on my pistols will have an exposed hammer, so they can be fired SA, which means in most cases the guns will have a very nice trigger. a 6# trigger in a hand gun is not condusive to accuracy. Glock. Then the XD 40. I have a XD 45 tactical and an XD 40 subcompact. No problem with either. Both have been flawless.

Browning does make a nice pistol though.

My full size S&W M&P is nice, but my G23 is my favorite. Also I have a G22 that I just bought, but the jury is still out on it.

BTW speaking of DAO pistols I had an XD 40 that I could not hit the broadside of a barn with, strangely one of the more accurate pistols I have ever shot is my little LCP.

While I very much appreciate the single action autos, there is much to be said for a good double action only auto pistol too, such as the Kahr. If you cut your teeth on double action revolvers, you will have no problem quickly mastering this trigger, and getting combat accuracy from it.

I've been real happy with my CZ-75B in 40 S&W. For a concealable package the old, discontinued Firestar is hard to beat. Pity they quit making them.

Years ago I shot a Beretta Cougar (Eye-talian version, not the current Stoeger Turkish gun) in 40 and thought it was about the sweetest-shooting semi I had ever fired. I don't have .40s so I never bought one but have considered getting a 9mm at some point.
