whats you guys thinks of this round for deer ?

bit on the frangible side IMHO. I"ve gotten some pretty good holes with it in coyotes. I'd rather use 75 amax on deer if I had the choice. OR best yet a swift or TSX or partition worst case. Though the old 64 grain power point really has never been a bad fall back to or the 63 grain sierra semi point if you reload.

my rifle is 1:7 twist, so wanted the heavy bullet, i've never seen a box of 64 power points, i've looked and looked.

i can find these, and PMC 55 and 62 gr, soft points,

55's are very common, but all are FMJ,

I"d try the 62 soft points then. Have had fairly good results from PMC Stuff over the years. The 55 soft points ain't bad either.

The problem with 75 bthps is that they are not designed to open up, they are a target bullet and unless proven other wise IE like Bergers, you could run the gammut from FMJ performance to soft point performance to hollow point blow ups.

I suspect you could order what you need, but with haz mat fee. But not knowing where you are, I can't say for sure.

If you go 55s, stay off the shoulders would be my suggestion. Though I suggest the same with the 62s.

I loaded up some 75 gr Swift Scirroco II for deer this year. The load is highly accurate; but I have not shot a deer yet this season, so no results.

I would not risk a wounded deer with a bullet not designed to be used on such. No reason TOO use such a bullet, really, when there are so many good bullets for to be used.

IF you cannot get them in time for a soon coming hunt, I could send you some Barnes TSX bullets to use.

And there is a difference of if they work on game or not. IE Sierra Matchkings flat work. I"ve just no really good experience with the BTHPs that lead me to think I"d want to try them on deer, like I said the amax is another bird....

FTR has had decent luck with Swift accuracy wise, and I've seen reports of others running them with good luck on deer.

Personally I'd fall back to a 62 X myself or even teh 53...

I recently purchased a Remington AR 15 with the 18 inch barrel in .223. My question to you AR 15 fellas is, why wouldn't you shoot the 90 grain Sierra bullets since they have a BC of .500 which is better for longer range? Also a 90 grain would be better suited for deer or coyote? JUst wondering since I haven't purchased the bullets yet and have about 500 to load here. My goal is to terminate a lot of coyotes this winter. LOL

I just checked and the heaviest bullet that can be fired from clip can't weigh more than 77 grain (Sierra and Berger)

Gosh, where to begin?

The 90gr bullet requires a 1:6.5 twist in your puny short 18 inch barrel. Also, 90gr is quite heavy and I doubt you would be able to get much above 2400FPS, if that, in your short barrel.

BC is nice, but you need some muzzle velocity to use that BC. I shoot 80gr JLK with a BC of .510 and in my 26 inch barrel, I get over 2850FPS without danger. Don't even dream of reaching that with a 90gr bullet in your 18 inch barrel.

I am still telling you that the 75gr Swith Scirocco II is something you should look into.

There is no limit in the COAL of a cartridge with respect to clips. On the other hand when you use the clips to load the magazines, you will be having problems with a COAL greater than 2.260.

I will try the 55 grain Nosler varminator first off and see how they go. Might buy afew preloaded boxes so I can benchmark my reloads by. Thanks for the tips but got some good reading on this fellas article. Check it out if you haven't already.

For deer??? Unless you like eating lead dust I'd shy away from the frangible bullets. In .22's the Barnes bullets simply can't be beat.

I was off topic there with my post because I'm after coyotes not deer. In Canada it is illegal to hunt any game animal with a .223 but for varmints it's OK. I wouldn't even consider using a .223 on deer when there are so many better calibers out there for this purpose. I would use my old 30-30 before I'd use that caliber. It is actually not recommended by many experts who know more about this round than I do. Have agood day and good hunting.

223 with correct bullets and shot placement, and the ability to pass up bad shots, is as deadly as any other round on deer, even big deer.

Doesn't mean its for everyone or even legal everywhere.

More deer than you would think have been done in with the 223....

Try a 65 sierra BT GK with about 26.5 of vv540 cci 450. It's a great deer bullet. And supper accurate. Use 69 data but 540 rocks

I've heard varying reports on 540 lately?? Seems as if its not what it used to be but I have enough left to not sweat it for some years to come I think.... any info on the new540? Burn rates change?

Just as a quick update, last night I shot a running hog with my Ar using the Swift Scirroco II bullet. The pig went down and stayed down with one shot. It was about 200 pounds.

That bullet is awesome and very accurate.
