.45-100 Sharps with a 535 gr paper patched bullet over 94 gr of Swiss 1.5f.
That will do the job all right. A lot better than most modern calibers, I suspect.

Brent, that last quote is classic. Gotta good chuckle from it .
I've never hunted Elk or out west. Hope to some day. I really have plenty of rifles that would serve including:
Ruger 77 MKII Stainless Laminate in .30-06 Win 70 Featherweight .300 WSM Browning 71 Carbine .348 Win Browning BLR .358 Win Marlin 444 Remington 7600 Pump .35 Whelen and several .308 Wins of different manufacture.
I'd have a hard time picking the best for Elk out of that mix and with no real experience, could hardly state a favorite for that task. No bad options there really with the right bullet selected.
Mind you, I have only one small bull to my name so far but I sure do favor my old tang safety Ruger 77RS in 35 Whelen. I even found a new McMillan Ruger style on ebay for $125 a number of years ago. Topped it off with a Leupold 4x28 and have an XS backup sight ready to go. The whole package feels right to me.
My brothers and I are going on our first elk hunt this year. One of them can't be pried loose from his .308 no matter what. The other was asking me if he should go out and get a .300 RUM. My advice was, stick with the .30-06 that's always done you so well, they've probably already got enough funny stories out there about guys from back east with new uberblasters they can't shoot. I'd like to take my 6.5X55 but will probably take my Kimber 8400 in .300 WSM, just so nobody gets nervous, you know.
This is very difficult for me to answer because I own and use several different rifles depending upon where I intend to hunt. If I had only one it would be my old custom Sako action .338 WM. It also lends a feeling of comfort when the grizzleys are nearby.
Idahoguy, Right on, lets make that the Selway, not the Selous, albiet I have hunted both extensively, but the Selous is really short on elk! and I have not seen a buffalo or elephant in the Selway for years, guess we killed them all
Elephant hunting in North America? I'll nominate Texas. South of San Antonio all the way to the Rio Grande would be perfect for "endangered" African species. Of course would have to import other African species to recreate their environment!
With all those Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Lions, Leopards, Jackals, hyenas, various antelopes, etc... I bet that the big game hunting would be outstanding! And illegal immigrants would find themselves being dined on.

Don't forget the Siberian Tigers I planted in unit 36!

If someone can genetically recreate the Wooly Mammoth then we could hunt them in Idaho!
Your Siberian Tiger release sounds great for hunters and outfitters. But when the cow and sheep ranchers start hunting down YOU! You better find a deep hiding spot!
I think Siberian Tiger's roar would interfere with Summer mating season in the campgrounds! And then there is the sharing of the hot springs with the cats. Imagine the calls the Forrest Service would get from the locals...
