Has anybody tried the 50 gr Varmint Grenades in a .223 with TAC? JB in his Loads That Work article said that 26 gr of TAC was a good choice and that is the starting load with the 50 gr Ballistic Tip in the Ramshot manual. But I am wondering if because the Grenade is a somewhat different bullet if that would still be a good starting point.

I think that TAC would work fine. I use 26.5 grains of TAC with the 50 grain NBT for a velocity of 3300 fps in a 22" barrel. Please note that 26 grains is not the starting load in the Ramshot manual. The starting point is 24.8 grains for the 50 NBT with a max of 27.5.

We might have different Ramshot manuals, because in mine 26.0 gr of TAC is the starting load with a 50 gr Ballistic Tip and the max is 27.5 gr. Maybe my manual is an older version than yours. Thanks for the information.

Mine is edition 4.2. The one on their web site is edition 4.3 and has the same data. It can be down loaded in PDF format.

Thank you, I didn't realize they had a manual on the internet. I was using edition 3. They have the max load with the 50 gr. Varmint Grenade bullet with a max load of 25.9 gr of TAC, so it wouldn't be a wise thing for me to load 26.0 gr for a starting load.

Longer bearing surface, load it like a 55-60g bullet. Mistake to use 50g data.

Barnes Recommends a 1:10" twist rate for the 50 Grain Varmint Grenade. Their most accurate powder tested is RL 10X (min = 19.2, max = 22.2 gr) with a max velocity of 3202 fps. For TAC they recommend min = 23.4 and max = 26.4 gr with max velocity at 3332 fps.
GOod luck,
Elk
