Hey guys, I was in the store yesterday and saw a good deal on some ammo so I picked up a few boxes. One in particular was Winchester Supreme 168gr Ballistic Silvertip in .308. It was only 17 bucks so I grabbed up a box to try in my BLR. Has anyone out here tried this bullet out? I'm betting it will shoot pretty good in the BLR, but I'm more interested in anyone's experience with the bullet's perfomance on Whitetail sized game? I've heard that the newer Ballistic tips are better than the older ones, and the .30 cal and up are fine. I guess I'm just a little concerned about bullet blow up at short ranges, ie under 50yds. I've heard horror stories of Ballistic tips leaving only superficial wounds at close distances? Anyone out there have any real experience witht this bullet in particular? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

Matt, this is going to open the same can of worms that goes 'round and 'round about ballistic tips. The newer ones like the Hornady Interbond and Nosler Accubond are bonded so they won't blow up on impact. I don't know what bullet the Winchester is using. I just don't see the need for them personally. A 150 or 165 grain Interbond or corelokt or power point or hi shock will certainly do the trick dependably and cleanly. I am thinking that a BLR is likely more of a shorter range gun, like most levers are more often used for, so the ballistic tip would be an even less attractive choice.

I shoot 150gr Ballistic Silvertips in my 300WSM. 4 whitetails between 100 and 150yds and I have never recovered a bullet. It just leaves a .30 cal hole on both sides of the deer.

If I'm not mistaken, the change to thicker jackets occurs with the 180-gr. .30-cal. bullets, and up. The 150s are still relatively thinner. That doesn't necessarily mean they're not a good choice, though.

In a 20" blr the ballistic tips will only be going around 2600 fps at the muzzle. At this speed they will work just fine, even on close shots.

Keep your eyes open for the winchester accubond ct. Thats the cats meow as far as plastic tipped bullets are concerned. No need for "will they perform" discussions with that bullet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'd have to say the Winchester BT will work just fine. I shoot them out of my .280 Rem, and shoot the Federal Nosler BT's from my 7mm-08. The last deer I shot with one, only ran 10 yards before piling up. For Antelope and deer, they work great for me, but I would not use them on anything bigger.

i shot 2 bucks this past weekend with 168 grain ballistic silvertip in a 308 buck #1 was shot at 30 yards 9 pt. 172# shot between shoulder and rib cage quartering toward me exit off side low dropped in his tracks. #2 shot at 75 yards from a ground blind 8 pt. 160 # deer was walking right at me he stopped and looked to his right turning slightly shot in neck shoulder junction dropped in his tracks.recovered bullet jacket under skin off side.and my rifle shoots these bullets better than anything else <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I shot a 150 lb deer last year from about 25 yards straight on with 168 grain BST. Punched a hole in the sternum, decimated the insides and veered off and exited out the behind the rib cage. Buck went 15 yards and down.

these bullets work great at .308 win velocities.

does anyone know where the

nolser bts line is for sure. i load 100gr bts in my 25.06 for deer as weel as coyotes.

i decided to use the 100gr bt after shooting a few yotes and exsperinceing pass through and little damage

i ounce shot yot at 300yds with 130gr 277 nolser bt. bullet didnt exit. i was quite shocked.

ive then taken yotes and stabbed them with partitions and core lokta that just tore the livin crud out of them. bullets from 25 cal 100gr - 30cal 180s

but ive used the same core lokts and partitions on deer and elk with very good results

what gives.

I am now using the 168 gr ballistic rounds in my rem. 700. They perform very well on white tail deer. The only thing puzzling is the ballistic rounds at 200 yds were 4 inches high
compared to a 165gr federal premium round.Had to re zero my scope for this round.
