For me, there is a point where the knife looks too good to use. Can't know that problem...................... Some folks make a good lookin' using knife........ <laughin'> I'm able to use the blades without dinging them up but the sheaths tend to show the wear from bumping around in my back. Water from a leaking bladder had been my worse offender to date. I did take one of these on a New Zealand hunt.

I like using my nice knives and getting them really bloody. And if they get a scratch or two, so be it...just character marks anyways. Unless bought for an investment only, the whole notion of safe queens makes no sense to me.

It was never my intention to make the knives safe queens but I've been assembling knives and now must have about a dozen or so. When I head out I generally gab one of the new ones our my good ol'e stand by.

That's cool that you're making your own and I imagine that if she's a real pretty one then I, like you, might think twice about taking it out in the field......................... Nah, not really!!!

The guy I bought that Ingram #5 I posted the picture of used to post here under the name of CAS. He told me it was one of over thirty Ingrams he owned at the time. I agree with the notion of safe queens especially Ingrams as they are working fixed blade knives. There was a time here at the Campfire when folks here couldn't seem to own enough of them, Ingram has/had a 3-4 year wait and any model Ingram that was posted in the Classified's lasted as little as 15 minutes.

That was/is a very classy blade. Was that spalted maple?
Gene's wares are top notch, but there are more than a few makers out there with equal skill. I've got a few of Gene's blades and a few on the wait list...I owe a hearty thanks to Stick/Steelhead and crew for turning me/us on to his work. Gene's also a pleasure to deal with and a classy gent. I like giving my hard earned money to guys like him and using a fine working tool that's easy on the eyes, for me, adds another dimension to our sport.

Yes, that was Spalted Maple Burl. Don't get me wrong, for what it is it was an impeccably finished knife. I guess I just don't see the multi year wait for a working knife that costs $350+. Perhaps the wait is connected to Stick/Steelhead as it seems like some of their fan club have been ordering them a half dozen at a time. The good news is when they get sick of em there will be a lot for sale in unused condition. Hopefully, they will all order them in S30V..............................

Wow...I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly don't have a grand laying around that I can up and drop on a set of knives...yeesh.
I suppose if there is certainty that they will retain their value, then the investment would be similar to a firearm where the value either stays the same or even goes up as years pass.

The knife at the top is mine. Made in England by Lance Ockenden. Cost was $215 USD which included the shipping. The file work on the top of the tang is filled. Looks great and won't file your hand. Can't fondle it till Christmas though. Oh, check this link for another beautiful knife by Lance. http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81776

Again I'm no expert but it appears Lance is grossly under pricing his work. The file work is nothing short of spectacular.
Great idea filling the file work.

if you want to view some beautiful, hand crafted, inexpensive knives, visit the for sale section of Blade Forums. Much of the work is high quality, equal easily to Ingram's stuff, and available right now, for hundreds less. They have an area for folders as well. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=754

What type of wood? Very nice knife.
For me it is an example where beautiful wood down plays the beauty of the pins. In my opinion, brass or stainless pins would have appeared nearly as nice.
For me, mosaic pins look best in a plain handle, like white macarta, ivory, etc.

that is Desert Ironwood. i bought that knife on the for sale board here.
and i agree, SS pins would work as well. i do like the plain pins with nice wood and stag.
but i take what i can get.
