I am looking at a Kimber 84M Classic in 243. It must be a bit older as it has the 2 position safety.

What are your opinions of these somewhat older rifles?
how old is it?
feeding problems?
accuracy?

Did the 2 position safety lock the bolt down when closed on safe?

I've read on here that Kimber will switch it out to a 3 position if desired, can't help on the other questions.

I've held the same model/caliber etc at a friend's gunshop a couple years back but can't remember how the 2 pos safety worked. Nice gun, esp if it has an "older" price tag on it..

I had no feeding problems with mine , the stock warped badly so I sent it back to Kimber . While it was there it got a new 3 pos safety for 50 dollars. They replaced the stock , bottom metal and really gave me a nice piece of wood(probably select grade) the bottom metal had allen as opposed to the old slot head screws. Very accurate gun and mine was chambered in 7mm-08. Actually sorry I got rid of it should have kept it.

Yes the 2 position safety locks the bolt.

DakotaDeer,

If you get that Kimber, pay attention to the size of the scope mount base screws. The earlier Kimbers had #6 screws. They were changed to #8 screws about the same time the 3-position safety came out. IIRC the bases are different and not compatible with both screw sizes. Good luck with the 243!

Weird--I just emailed the owner and he said the safety does not lock the bolt in any format.

Yes, I do need to find out about the old size screw holes, as that is not easily changeable even at Kimber if they have a different size action machining.

My two position 84M in 308 doesn't lock the bolt in the rearward position either. It works great. I love it.

I put standard Leupold bases on mine and didn't even think about screw size. I guess they fit!!

Talley probably still has some of the older size screw bases in stock. I may have a set that fit's the older style laying around somewhere myself. Let me know if you buy the rifle and have trouble finding bases, it shouldn't be a big problem one way or the other.

I haven't bothered to upgrade my 84m 308 with the older style safety..............................DJ

Had the same rifle(bought mine in the Fall of 2002) in 308 Winny and never had any problems at all.

It's on GB, at a pawn shop in Montana. Not a super price anyway, IMO but one might be able to chew him down based on the 'inferiority' of the design.

Well the 3 position locks and for 50 bucks well worth it.

I guess if you buy the 2 pos model it is nothing more then a CRF Remington grin

True, and I could find a Model 7 a decent bit cheaper in that regard.

I picked up a used 84M recently with the 2 position safety. It does not lock the bolt.
I called Kimber customer service, gave thenm the serial number and they told me the day, month & year it was made. Also told me that it had 6x48 base screws instaed of the newer 8x40.
I ordered the bases straight from them.

As for the rifle, it is accurate with a great trigger and functions perfectly. Go ahead, it's only money. smile
