Has anyone used H 4198 in their 45-70? I have load data for it with 300 grain bullets running them out at 2500 fps. The start load is 59.5 grains at 2394 fps and a max charge of 63 grains at 2532 fps. This is listed in the Lee 2nd Edition load manual copy right 2009 and taken from Hodgdon Powder Company's own data base. Is this overly compressed for the 45-70 and a 300 grain bullet. Any one use this combo and have you had any trouble loading it???????

Those loads you list should only be used in a Ruger #1 or Siamese Mauser as they approach 50,000 CUP. In the Marlin 1895 45-70 the maximum load for H4198 and a 300 grain jacketed bullet is 60 grains. I have used 55 grains of H4198 with 300 grain Sierras, Hornadys and Speers with success. With published compressed loads if it seems you can't get all the powder into the case you will have to use a drop tube.

That is what I'm shooting, sorry for not specifying. I'm just starting to get the dies cranked up for my 45-70 and haven't begun to load for it but used the same powder for my 450 Marlin and have a couple pounds handy. It looks to produce good velocity and good % fill. I also posted this on another sight and was told that those loads were developed with Winchester brass which is full length compared to Hornady brass. Unfortunately that's what I have is Hornady brass from my Leverevolution ammo. Looks like I'll either reduce my loads a smidge or get new brass.

4198 works fine in my .45-70's, but recently I've used RL 7 to great effect. You get a bit higher velocities. It meters a might better too.

I use H4198 for my .45-70 guide gun. I used it successfully in Africa, with the 300 gr. nosler partition, to take 7 head of plains game. 51 gr. of H4198 got me 1950 fps. out of the 18 1/2" barrel.

I've used both 4198 and re7 with good luck. I think that sierra's manual claims best accuracy with 4198. I've also had decent luck with H322

That is the load I use in my GG, and it is an excellent load, going just over 2200 fps. Trajectory is very similiar to my .30-30 170 grain load. Accuracy is more than acceptable, and especially with the Speer bullet, can handle larger animals with ease.

Jackfish definitely knows his stuff in this area, he got me shooting my .450 Marlin with healthy dose of 4198 and a Ranch dog molded 430 gr. hardcast.
She now shoots right at moa with that load. Save me a lot of time and money listening to him.
