I have a Marlin 1895. It's one of the early 70's ones with the straight stock. My problem is that I can't adjust the rear sight high enough. The Remington 405gr factory slowpoke loads hit right on at 50yds when the rear sight is adjusted as high as it will go, but at 100yds they hit about 5" low. Then yesterday I shot some handloads with the 400gr Speer at about 1600fps, and it was even lower - 3" low at 50yds and, well, just forget it out past 100yds. A friend of mine has the same rifle and doesn't have this problem. His is sighted at 100yds with the Remington stuff and he has a couple clicks left. Anybody else had this problem? I know that .44mag pistols shoot higher with heavier bullets because the muzzle flips higher before the bullet exits the muzzle, but I have never seen a rifle shoot lower with faster bullets. Does this sound right or am I crazy?<P>The solution is obvious. I need new sights. I could get an Ashley peep for it, but I don't really like the way they look. I know that might sound stupid, worrying about how they look, but then the reason I shoot and hunt with a straight-stocked .45-70 levergun isn't for the superior ballistics. Aesthetics is also why I don't want to scope it. I've considered a Lyman tang peep sight, but it looks like they get in the way of your grip. Does anyone have experience shooting lever rifles with tang peeps on them? Am I just asking for a black eye? How about a lower front sight? -al

A few months ago there was a fellow on this board who was selling the tang sight for his 1895. He didn't like for just the things you are worrying about. btw, my 1895 shoots like your friends.
