Shot a deer with my CZ550 in 416 Rigby. Broadside @ 30 yds it ran around 50 yds after being hit thru the lungs. The blood trail was generous to say the least. Would say it was around a 2 yr old buck which had dropped its horns. Load was 300gr Barnes Tripleshok over 94.5 gr IMR4350.
Gee, I have heard guys complain about how a deer they lung-shot went 50 yards after being hit with that "lousy so-and-so bullet" or that wimpy little .243....

Boy, that's just poor shooting! ;-) I dropped a doe DRT with my 22-250 last weekend. Poked her through both shoulders and got the plumbing and top of the pump.
Good on you Jimmy. I've taken mine and my 375 a couple of times. Just never had the opportunity.
I'd be a might concerned about the 50 yard run after the good shot placement that you mentioned. If I were you, I think I'd consider moving up to the 458 Lott or perhaps the 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery next time.

Im pretty sure they dont make a ballistic tip in 416.I failed to mention this was a antlerless only season. The only season we can us hi power rifles here in Iowa.
Try some 350gr. Speer Hot-Cors, if you can find 'em, loaded over 50-55gr. of Accurate 5744. Makes an accurate low-recoiling load running around 1800-2000 fps. Plenty for whitetail and much cheaper to load. I need to get on the hunt for some Hot-cors myself. If there out there at all.
Nicely done! I have used my 416 Rigby on stuff as small as 8oz Beldens ground squirrels. Same bullet, too. They work pretty well..... Why not, and the best way to get good with your DGR is to USE it, and a LOT! Keep it up.

I have shot a few with the Rigby. It works better with a moose or elk though. All my deer ran at least 50yds. I think the bullets are a bit tough. I worried too I had not enough gun so this year I used a 460Wby. It performed better as the buck only went 20yds. Doing the funky chicken. Moose and Elk are all DRT's.
I have used the 416 Rem. and the 404 Jefferys on deer and Africn plainsgame many many times, and thats the same deal balistically..They work fine. If they run you have a very good blood trail. They don't do as much meat damage as say a 243 or 270. As Elmer used to say, you can eat right up to the hole.
I bet the petals all came off the bullet - that's why the deer ran so far.
If the bullet ever comes back from orbit I will check to see how many petals are left. Really though if some came off It wouldn't bother me any. It turned a charge
i've taken several sitka black tail with my .416 rem and had to shoot most of them twice for fear they'd walk off to far. now a .270 screws 'em up! taken a dozen or so ground squirrels with my .416, they didn't travel horizontaly as far as they did verticly...exspensive gopher huntin' for sure! but it digs a hole for 'em to be buried in all at the same time, after i salvaged all edible meat of course....
