I'll tell you what else is senseless. So far today I've had two co-workers seek me out:
1) "So, Shaman. I hear one of your buddies was out having fun."
2) "I think it's about time; hunters need to shoot each other-- put some sport back in it."
I'm livid. Since when does a deer hunter's life rate less respect?

I have been hearing about this tragic incident since about 0400 this morning. Each "news caster" puts a different spin on it Some say the bad guy was in somebody elses tree stand and shot two hunters who challenged him, them shot others as they came to help. Another says the bad guy left and then came back shooting. The weapon involved is discribed as a "high powered" rifle with a '' deer scope", a semi- automatic, an assault type rifle, and an AK-47. The version most previlant in the media will be the one that pleases the anti-gun lobby. This incident should not have happened. My heart goes out to the victims and tier families.

Oh yeah, I can hear the hand wringers coming to his defense already: cultural misunderstanding, language problem, afraid of the Americans, etc., etc.

This one even made the news up here in Northern B.C., Canada. A terrible thing to happen, indeed. We haven't even had an accidental death in some time, but you may be certain that these types of incidents will fuel the anti-gun, anti-hunt sentiment, especially when the facts are distorted to please the newshungry public. My heart goes out to the victim's families and friends. Regards, Eagleye.

Heard a report on a national radio news that the guy is a former CIA spook. Who knows, I'm sure we are going to hear all kinds of wierd things. Just wait for the new gun control legislation to come out of this.

However terrible, I'm happy to say this won't affect deer hunting laws in Wisconsin. Deer hunting, especially in the part of the state where this happened, is an event - schools and businesses close and 'everybody' goes.
This is an isolated act of a madman, and Wisconsin will recognize this tragedy for what it is.
I've no guarantee on how this will play out in other states and what kind of fuel it will be.

What a tragedy for the victims, their families, and all ethical SANE hunters. As was said, the media will have a field day with this! Too bad we don't hang criminals in this country anymore!!!

Whoa, this was way to close to home. I had an "incident" yesterday while elk hunting and got swarmed by four Vietnamese/Chinese (?). I shot and wounded a bull in the lower leg and the herd and bull ran past the group of V/C at about 50 yards and one of the guys proceds to unload his clip of .40 S&W at the bull as it went by.....never even cutting a hair. To make a long story short my partner and I finished the job with a lung shot and a dropping spinal tap.....then it got interesting. In Oregon the individual that delivers the final and killing shot gets to hang his tag. At this point the V/C come flying up in their pickup and bail out, "Where my elk, where my elk". Pointing in the opposite direction from the downed bull I tell them the herd went "that way". With them "chattering" away and getting too close for comfort, I lock and load and backed away. After much "chatter" and them trying to ask me questions I left and they soon departed the area. They showed back up 45 minutes later while we were working on the elk. The "leader" walks up saying its his elk which we tell him to kiss our azz and get the %@%&#$ out of here. Then he says "give me foot" Huh????? WTF? "Give me foot, we make foot soup" Yeah okay, whatever take a foot if you'd like. After talking amongst themselves they departed....foot still attached to the elk. ????????????????? The whole thing was bizarre and reported to Fish & Wildlife and state police.
It definately got to "elevated status" and not a comfortabe situation.

It was NOT a fully auto.. It was an SKS semi-auto. These people have little if any respect for game laws and private property. They need to learn some lessons, fast..

the stove should of been turned of about 1950. And the melting pot taken off the stove. There was a time when immigration was a good thing in this country. That time has long passed. It's time to look at "self preservation" now. This incident highlights for me the reasons I'm so stubborn about carrying a sidearm at all times in the woods (not that a sidearm would have helped these poor guys). If my feet are in the dirt, I've got a sidearm on. I wake up and get out of the tent, I've got a sidearm on. Sitting around fire at night, sidearm on. My 11 year old son who just got his first handgun this last summer is learining the same habits. Maybe not so critical if you're out in a group, but when I'm out alone, or especially with my young son, I WILL have the means to protect myelf and my family within arms reach at all times. With the influx of people unaccustomed to hunting, outdoor ethics and accepteted behaviors, and the outdoors in general into our outdoor world, incidents like this will only increase. You never know what (or who) you will stumble across while "in the middle of nowhere" anymore, or what their intentions are. More often than not when I'm out in the woods, the sidearm is not there for the 4 legged critters as much as it's there for the two legged predators. Be Safe fellow hunters! Don't make the assumption that because someone is sharing your outdoors past-time, that they share you same knowledge, values, and intentions.
Guns are responsible for killing as much as Rosie O'Donnel's fork is responsible for her being FAT.

One thing I can't understand. Why, since this dickhead was a resident of MN, didn't he go hunting in Minnesota? No deer there? The license for resident MN is a whole lot cheaper than an out-of-state WI license..
I frankly do not trust most MN license-plated hunters I find in the woods where I hunt. Most walk right into your hunting area, even right up to your stand/blind to find out info. One guy last Saturday was walking down the tracks wearing his orange vest but NO hat (Illegal). I checked, he was from Oakdale, MN.. One guy during the Zone-T hunt was checking me out with the scope on his rifle!!!! I quickly ducked behind a tree. Two hours later I caught up with him at his vehicle. Yep, Minnesota. I told him he better not be using his scope to check out other hunters or he might find one that will use his to check out his hemoroids. My wife's brother in law from Plymouth, MN has hunted with me a couple of times and I've tried now to be unavailable if or when he calls.. Between the swept muzzles, the lack of common sense when encountering other hunters has really turned me off.
I'm sure I'm going to get some heat from this post, but I'm just posting my experiences with a FEW Minnesota hunters that I've encountered in the areas I hunt in WI. I don't hunt in MN. I wish they didn't hunt here. Both states have large herds of deer with approximately equal land availability for hunting.
Maybe I'm just crabby from hearing about this complete fool who took 5 lives with a rifle. This is just going to cause us all nothing but more nightmares with anti-gunner legislation. Too bad somebody didn't shoot this clown and bury him in a black Ash swamp....

I'm glad everything worked out ok for you. It almost seems you'll have to start carrying a sidearm for "people" protection instead of bear protection while hunting. And I thought we had problems up here............

This doesn't make sense. How in the heck does a guy armed with a piddly little SKS manage to kill and wound that many hunters? Did anybody get off a return shot? Were they ambushed? Didn't the one who got off a call on the walkie-talkie tell them that someone was shooting at them? Presuming, they knew someone was shooting at hunters, why did they just drive up? It makes no sense. I have to believe that if that had happened where I live, it would have been a gunfight with a dead Hmong before it was all said and done.

One link I found to Hmong: http://www.jefflindsay.com/Hmong_tragedy.htmlEvidently they are somewhat like the Montagnards in that they fought along side us, but these folks (Hmong) were located in Laos, (according to this link) Evidently the Hmong have gotten nothing but a royal poop sandwich ever since the Vietnam war... Evidently several tens of thousands were recruited and employed by some sort of CIA secret army in Laos. At least that is what the link says. -------------------- This story is very tragic, beyond words tragic. A lot of implications too. I will be toting a side arm this season for certain. I noticed in the Navy and also when working overseas that the Flips can be reall clanninsh, sometimes down right mean as the devil and non-trusting. I generally view almost all the hunters and gun-nuts as my friends if not brothers as most of us are cut from the same piece of cloth. But now we got this "ethnic" element entering into it. This is not good. This whole story is real real disturbing.
