I have a 280AI in the works. If you've got one yourself, what's your favorite bullet with it?

My idea for mine is an "all around" rig for any weather, any game (antelope thru elk). I want to develop one "go-to" round.

Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip. Just finished working up a load with the new Reloder 17. Have to chrono the finished results, but 60.5 grains gave me 3350 and I went up another grain, but it got too dark on me. I'm thinking 3400 won't suck.

Why is it called a double u, should'nt it be called a double v?

160 gr Accubond at 3000 fps works for me. Either RL22 or RL25.

Watch those do-nuts! My 280AI with Nosler brass is the only gun I have that develops them. If I use 280 Rem brass and fire form then I don't get them. Go figure

With RL22 my rifle and I both like the TTSX, 140's shot a little better but I went with 150's( still under 1") since I was after elk as well as mule deer.

Woods,

What are the "do-nuts" you talk about. Maybe I am the only one who is missing something.

The 139 grain Interbond works magnifico in my 7 SAUM, Should work identical in a 280 AI.

I have had great luck with 120 Ballistic tips and RL22. I am hoping to work up a good accurate load with Rl17 and 162gr Hornaday BTSP. Not a "premium" bullet but have heard nothing but good about it.

I thought 160gr ABs was the only bullet I needed but a season of use has me looking another direction.

A do-nut happens when brass flows along the shoulder and makes an internal ridge at the neck/shoulder junction
[Linked Image]

The most common way to check is to take a bullet and insert it down a fired and unsized case neck and it will stop at that point
[Linked Image]

I check for them with a set of pin gauges

One of the prerequisites for do-nuts is to have a tight necked chamber. Mine is .313". Do you know what neck dimension you are having chambered?

Never had a problem with "do-nuts". My 280AI has a .311 neck. Also use WW .270 brass that is necked up to .30 cal then back down to 7mm. As for bullet choice...140NAB. Drive em at 3200+ and they are just friggin deadly.

I used one for a while. For minimized wind drift, and the ability to cleanly take whitetails yet penetrate through a moose I settled on the 150TSX at 3050 fps.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Yes, my barrel has a .313" neck from Hart
[Linked Image]

So I neck turn to ~.0125" (to allow some for springback and a .003" to .004" bullet grip)
[Linked Image]

and with a Forster reamer (~.003" over caliber diameter)
[Linked Image]

I can trap the neck brass between the reamer and outside neck cutter and get rid of the do-nuts and clean up the outside of the neck
[Linked Image]

and the brass ends up at ~.012"
