TUFF If you think your wise for going in with a 50lb pack remember you could be adding 200+lbs to your trip out. Now thats not a ton but if you are solo and in very rough country like I am 3-5 miles in could be 3K+ in elevation gain alone 1 way not to mention the terrain and every lb less in your pack could mean 1 less round trip up the mountain and back out. I do know one guy that hauls in that much but thats because there is 2 gallons of water in his pack as eastern wa can be very dry and hot. Also remember off trail means busting brush, scrambling across boulder fields and sliding down avalanche chutes.

Not to split hairs, but a man with a "prick", but no brain to properly use it, ain't much good at all. I would say the man's brain is the best part of him. Unless, of course, the brain is not something he wishes to talk about, in which case the "prick" is the most likely fallback position, especially for the brain-challenged!

China, read what he packs. It isn't even considered lightweight.

Then maybe read the thread title. Ultra light backpack hunting outfit WHAT do you bring?

OTFLMAO,

Sorry but you really have no idea how funny that is. Why? You haven't a clue who your talking to. Ultralite and hardcore don't even begin to scratch the surface when attempting to describe Tuff(aka. dirtytough). You can only hope that if your hurt/tired/need help packin that this is the man you run into.. But I doubt that will happen unless you happen to be around the 27 mile mark..

Good luck and enjoy the mountains..

Now that some of you guys have irinated all over each others boots can we get onto something more constructive afterall its been years since most of us have stepped into a junior high locker room. And Im sure theres not a single thing in my pack that you all couldn't nitpick to pieces but most of it works very well for me and might work good for others. If a less experienced packer walks away from here with an idea that helps them drop 1-5 lbs out of their pack then theres a benefit to all and that idea can come from anyone.

Ultra light is different things to different fellows. Personally i think the guys with tarps sleeping on beds of pine bows are nuts- but then I used to do that in my 20's and early 30's!!
Kind of a pot calling the kettle thing.....

I could probably still hack that style trip for a night but my body holds up better with a higher level of comfort. Its the reason I schlep my Expend Synmatt on almost every trip. Is it UL- no! But I sleep like my bed at home which is important to me when I'm beating myself up in the mtns.

I've been stuck out overnight- actually a few times. Once was due to chasing too far and my mini mag was low but even with a fresh set of batteries IME those only work for 1 1/2 hrs. That was many years ago and now 2 headlamps at about 3 oz suit me just fine for UL.

Knife wise, I've had many but like something with good steel- like the CPM S30V steel- will hold an edge for 2 elk without touch up and some of the other steels just cannot do that. I use that Alpha with the saw and have a small pocket knife that I always have in my pocket with compass, lighter, and chapstick and on afternoon stalks away from my pack I take a headlamp.

I think where must new guys muff it on UL backpacking is too much clothing. Besides layers, I have an extra pair of socks and boxers. Now I'm early archery and not packing in late rifle in snow so that keeps my clothing req less.

Nothing I waer on these hunts takes long to dry so usually no prob. for me to do a quick wash midday. My favorite hunting pant, the REI Mistral with Schoeller Dynamic fabric can be washed and practically shaken out and put them back on.

Nylon/polyester type blends work out really well Ive been using shirt/pants from columbia for several years now and if they get wet you can put them in your sleeping bag at night and they dry out faily well. Not sure if thats a good idea for down bag users or not. Looking through the comments on backpacks TUFF mentioned packs in the 6-7lb range Which packs are these? Im obviously using a recreational backpack and I know there are packs targeting hunters with heavy loads what are the differences and what makes a pack better for hunting than a general use backpack? like I said earlier my pack is 4+lbs and I survived the 80Lb pack out but it was only a couple miles not sure if I should change packs or stay with what I have.
