I have worked for the same construction company since 1985. In 1998 I was given a supervisor job with a company vehicle. The company truck was used to deliver job related materials, pick up excess materials, drive to many different jobsites to check on employees. Over the past few years our work load has slowed to a snail's pace. A lot of the work that used to be done by field laborers is now done by me. Monday morning I was asked to return the company truck, I asked what I was to use for transportation and was told I would have to provide my own truck now with no expences to be paid by the employer.

Ask what the company's reimbursement rate is for use of your own vehicle.
Be not weary in well doing.

tell em you wont do it out of your own pocket. they need to compensate you for your mileage at least, and maybe even for your time.

ask them how badly they want your experience on the job...

To me, the tax writeoff isnt enough to justify the wear and tear and added mileage to my truck. Let alone the cost of fuel

You might be better off tax wise if you use your truck for work purposes without being reimbursed. Check with a tax accountant.

Every region may be different, here in Az we've been hit the hardest along with Nevada. 80% of construction companies have shut down, those still alive are hanging on by a thread.
You need to evaluate whether you will be able to find another job, is your company producing enough capital to pay overhead and wages plus extras, is this survival mode or being greedy.
There will be hundreds of people applying for your job the first day you quit.
Things to think about.

Things are slow pretty much everywhere in the construction services industry, so I am assuming you don't have somewhere else to go.
In that situation, I would make it clear that your vehicle would be used to transport you, and only you, and your tools to the jobsite. No hauling employee's. No hauling of materials.
Legally, there are problems for you if you do. You won't be covered under their liability insurance and will be responsible for damages if you are involved in a wreck.
Insurance costs may well be the reason they are reducing their fleet.

I'm down to less than 20 hours a week, so the added cost outways the benifits as far as i can see

LOT of questions ,,what are your answers , feelings situation??? don't answer me asn yourself!!!!! good luck.

If you would be taking home less than or just over unemployment, make them lay you off, unless you are receiving medical benefits also. Alot of issues to weigh.

How many miles would you have to drive a day with your own truck?

I'm not sure about this, but I think that if your truck is not registered as a commercial vehicle (as mine is not) you can be fined if you carry work related material.

I have given up every benefit i had, insurance vacation time paid holidays and profit sharing. The truck was all that was left.
Milage varies from job to job. Usually about 100 miles per day
