Both the 308Norma and 300Weatherby are either rich man's or reloader's cartridges.

300WBY ammo is now available from several manufacturers at normal prices. Remington, Hornady, PMC, Black Hills etc. Besides.... ALL ammo should be hand rolled for big game hunting anyway.

I would be careful about reaming some 30-06 barrels to 300 WinMag. For example the Rem sporter.
Rem uses a larger contour for the magnums.
Opening up the Rem '06 bbl to 300WM might leave your chamber walls a tad thin. This probably applies to other factory barrels as well.

The threaded barrel shank is the same diameter whether you have a magnum or a sporter contour and the full size portion of the contour ahead of the receiver is sufficiently long to contain the entire cartridge so the difference between the magnum and the sporter contour is all ahead of the chamber to the muzzle.
Therefore the barrel will be strong enough around the chamber whether it's reamed 30-06 or 300WM.

The least expensive way is to leave the rifle in 30-06 and use Hornady Superformance ammo. That will get you 300 Winmag velocities or very close to it.

My Rem 30-06 sporter begins to taper down 3/8" forward of the receiver. That's the factory issue tube. The Magnum countour is beefier near the receiver/chamber area. That's probably for a reason.
